Principal Purgus: "You're wonderful with the children, Miss Degroot. Have you considered teaching?" Luann: "Yes. Plus singing, and acting, and set design. It's all a huge dilemma" Principal Purgus: "What if I asked you to be lead teacher at our summer day camp? Would that help with your dilemma?" Luann: "Uh... (Quill: "Wanna come to New York with me this summer?")"

Quill’s internship in New York is only 10 days long (see the April 13 strip). Even if Luann doesn’t go to New York with Quill, it’s not like he will be away from her for very long.

This is Luann’s’ chance to sing the blues about missing Quill, act like she cares about others, and design ways to put down Tiff. All three things she wants to do…

I’m excited that we get a plot line that likely will actually reveal what the characters did and have a resolution. I hope she is actually forced to make a choice. If she had the money for New York in the first place, she might be able to visit him there for a long weekend. Of course he should, in theory, be super busy if the NY program is only 10 days long.
I was always confused as to where she would stay while in NY. Summer internship programs for students often place them in summer dorms or with sponsor families. I would be unhappy if my dorm-mate decided to bring the SO along in our tiny room — and report it. I would absolutely put my foot down if the student I was housing in my home wanted to bring a boyfriend/girlfriend to leech off my goodwill. And it seemed unlikely they would get a free hotel room for 10 days – those are expensive in NY.

All Luann has to say is she already accepted a previous invitation. It has already been established that teaching is a option.

is a dilemma, is not so simple, “summer camp” seems “safe” but if she goes NY she might get experience as set design by causality, which would be lost if she does not go, and those few days, might become many weeks for Quill

You have 80+ years to work and figure out a career. You only get to be young for the first 20-ish. Be carefree while your “responsibilities” are few.
Perhaps her boss knows someone in NY who needs a summer day camp teacher…
Wallythe2 over 9 years ago
Luann, go for your dream, go for Quill. If your dream fails to develop, you can always do the teacher thing… so many have done it and are still doing it… Being a teacher is not a life goal for most of the teachers out there… Teaching is the ‘fall- back’ job they end up in… and they hate it. You can see it in their eyes… It only pays the bills.
notbornyesterday over 9 years ago
I dunno Luann, lets see, last I checked the performing arts had more to do with personal contacts and networking…and New York City is ground zero for the performing arts, especially for those hoping for their “Big Break”, and going away to NYC …alone…unchaperoned…with Quill…is bound to give Mom and Dad cardiac arrest…and isn’t that what growing up is all about ?
or…if you want to be a teacher, just stay safe and boring, take dull classes ad nauseum,, get those credentials, and someday be an underpaid, overworked, stressed out member of a profession few want. Like ten days in NYC could ever wreck THAT career path. Plus Mommy and Daddy will be SO PROUD of their little Luann, after all she always cops out for the safe and sensible thing.
kenhense over 9 years ago
We’ve all been there: What we SHOULD do as opposed to what we WANT to do. It isn’t just a matter of not being with Quill for a couple of weeks. It’s the potential thrill of Luann and Quill being ON THEIR OWN together – the door opening to becoming adults.
Boophilus over 9 years ago
“You have 80+ years to work” :Proceed with caution! This is how many college students and young adults get into a cycle of debt — then thy really ARE working 80+ years to pay back the indiscretions of youth.
It’s all about moderation. She should pursue experiences, but realistically. How exactly will she be paying for the flight and activities in NY? If you have a summer job, it’s not unreasonable to ask for one day off. Like I said, she could compromise and spend a 3-day weekend with Quill.Pointspread over 9 years ago

I can see it now… it could be getting set up that Luann & Tiff will be at the summer camp, all that’s left is to set it up so Gunth will be there, too. Reverse jealousy, where last time Luann was upset that Tiff was wooing Quill, but this time it’ll be Tiff & Gunth together with Luann watching from the sidelines. It could get interesting,…
Sisyphos over 9 years ago
Most of the time, in a case like this one, I’d say choose with either your head or your heart, but understand the differences. In Luann’s case, however, the “head” is a weak player, outclassed by the heart. So, my guess is that she will chose to go with Quill. What position, if any, Purgus might hold open for her remains to be seen; this could even become a big chance for Tiffany to become lead teacher; whatever her attitudinal deficiencies, Tiff in fact had great rapport with the kids….

It’s simple enough: Luann could have a future running a drama program for children someday. Actually, that’s a lot more plausible than ever having any snuggling time with Quill in NYC. (She couldn’t even snuggle with him in a closet at Muni U.)

I don’t want to be told Luann is good with kids. I want to be shown it. I’ve seen a few strips where she bonds with kids, but I’ve seen a few where Tiff does too, and we’re supposed to believe Tiff is a terrible teacher. So. Show me Luann is super teacher, don’t just say so.

So despite the internship not even being set in stone Luann is still operating like it’ll happen for sure. Seems like we’re setting up for the “waaa I want to go with Quill but have to make an adult decision.” Singing and acting? Don’t remember many strips where she shows actual interest in it short of wanting to go to Tish.

She can do both. His internship isn’t for the whole summer (unless there’s some side covo that wasn’t in the strip where they decide to stay the entire summer in NYC).

“The Sidetracks of New York”^Good one! – But I wonder if it’s going to be “sidetracks”. We still don’t know if her “mode of thought” is that that should be the “main”, or if this opportunity actually presents her with what she would want even more so. Usually , it’s been the “former”. Will be interesting to see which is the one that really grabs her attention more…
IDK, though. At this

(While enjoying a mid-morning bowl of latakia and a second large, bold coffee, I contemplate the matter of Luann:) Even though I was off the mark a bit concerning TIffany and NYC, I was still somewhere in the ballpark thinking that the story arc had morphed back into the NYC trip. So, is Luann a) mostly Quill-crazed and she gives up the opportunity to show and develop some leadership skills for a potential future career in teaching, or b) will she forgo the trip to NYC? In my manner of thinking, it would be easiest for her to pursue the teaching leadership gig as she has not apparently done any real planning for the NYC trip (telling parents, acquiring funds, etc). Also, the possibility of the trip falling through (Quill does not GET the internship) is still a real possibility. What is better for Luann… a low risk bet with potential to have a high payoff, or a high risk bet with a more ambiguous potential payoff? To my manner of thinking, I think Luann would be better off participating in the teaching gig and planning other trips with Quill as the NYC trip seems to nebulous at the moment. Now, onto the subject of Tiffany…. her job demotion/promotion (depending on how you look at it) still does not seem to make a lot of sense in this arc. It was NOT required for the performance review for Luann, and having Tiffany stay with the kids or move into the office did not really have any impact to the story either. Could it be that Tiffany’s transition to the office was simply a “throwaway segue” by Greg designed to show basic performance reviews for all the employees…. leading into Luann’s “should-I-stay or should-I-go” dilemma…. and he was not really thinking of any sort of impact of a job change for Tiffany?

This is what Luann is good at. A tough choice for her to make, but she should accept this after consideration. Surely he could give her some time.

Actually…for many of them, they’ve already been on both GoComics and ArcaMax… I can guarantee that you have encountered at least two to three that have commented here and there, between yesterday and the balance of today. And there are at least 10-15 that have frequented both sites, but have left here and have been exclusively over there for a while (many of them, you’d recognize by screen name, if you were to take a look at their board)…

She took this job in the first place to make money. Now she wants to blow off a whole summer of making money so that she can go to NYC for 10 days, in the company of someone who will be working all the time that he’s there? Just how irresponsible is that? Frank, remind Luann that if she isn’t interested in earning money this summer, you’re not interested in helping pay for her tuition next fall, either.

Non-event??? Good grief. This can be a major turning point for Luann, ending her dithering around and getting her started in a career with children she would be good at.

Quill is going to be working all day and night during this internship. Luann will get to spend a lot more time together with him this summer in Pitt than she would in NYC. Luann should let him spend his 2 weeks there working on his career, while she starts a career of her own with her own summer job. It’s only a 2-week separation, people!

I do agree with you that in many regards Luann and Tiffany are much “the same person” at least on a metaphorical level. It is sort of like Luann is the “good” version and Tiffany is the “bad” version of the same coin. That sort of idea is common amongst many forms of historical and current literature. That said, I am starting to feel sad and would like to help Tiffany when she is unhappy or upset. When Luann is unhappy or upset, my own visceral response is much, much less. That idea of my having greater sympathetic feelings for Tiffany compared to Luann is a relatively recent development for me (perhaps a year or so ago). I like to think that Greg is writing Tiffany in a more nuanced fashion of late to very much give her character more depth and realism. Even though many still look at her stereotypically (through the historical lens of the comic), I think that historical view will continue to fade as Greg reveals more and more about Tiffany.

But again, in all his interactions, there have been many ( all types of readers) that have regarded Quill as a “boring character”….
I see Quill as a steady, calm voice of reason—and Luanne is crazy about him.

If Luann already made plans with Quill to go to NY, then she should do that. It would be irresponsible of her to change plans when other people are involved. If the boss is asking her to be the Lead Teacher, then there must be more than one teacher. Luann could take 2 weeks off for her already scheduled vacation and she can tell her boss about it now.

I simply can not imagine that Team Evans will ever countenance writing or illustrating, except extremely obliquely, sex outside of marriage. And that only as something simply assumed and never directly referred to. When Tiff and Gunther, Lu and Quill, or Brad and Toni leave a room where they have been alone and sport big dreamy grins I will stand corrected. That is severely unlikely. 9CwL this ain’t and it never will be.

Frank does like to make rather sardonic comments about Luann’s lack of ambition and whatnot. You’re right, no WAY is he gonna let his darling daughter out of his sight! I hope she continues to study the arts just to annoy him, though. It’s her life.-I am very flattered you have adopted DudeBro Nice Guy, btw! :)
doverdan over 9 years ago
Quill seems to be Miss Evan’s dream boyfriend, she saved him from the Volcano Downunder. .She may end up ruining the strip, for Luann cannot have any more BF drama. Thus we get Gunther’s sloppy drama instead, and all these choppy storylines with hanging arcs. .It’s hard to fire your daughter. But maybe grandson Jonathan Upchurch could be given a chance at storylines.
