Look! Luann really IS growing up!

“Won’t you come out to pla-a-ay?”

This could, potentially, be the beginning of a new, more mature outlook on life from Luann. She could actually begin thinking about a bigger picture than just herself and her fella. She ought to have realized by now that Quill is thinking about more than just her, and that he’ll totally respect her (might even respect her more) if she learns to do likewise.

So Dez will be a real character in this strip. About time we got a new one.

As if Luann figured out the budget. Realism will not be a factor. Ever. Writing stories be hard!-Ring ring! “Luann, never mind. You can’t come with me to New York because of reasons” in 3…2….1….

Frank will still hit the roof.

A moral dilemma!!! Where are the Leave it to Beaver parents when you need them?

I am so glad she is at least giving it more thought than a fleeting 5 seconds! Good comments so far today People! We’ll all get thru it yet!!

Five’ll getcha ten that a new character named Prudence will be the deciding factor. Wise is very likely right on this, whether realizing it or not. I immediately imagined a potential rival for Quill’s attention, perhaps another drama student accepting an internship at the same place as Quill’s.

I’m glad she’s confiding in her mom. Maybe, Luann is finally starting to mature. And Dez gave her good advice, too.

Agoraphobia would qualify being too prudent.

I told my kids to travel while they can. You’ll spend your whole life working. Now, one of them wants to get a job on the Mariana Islands. Maybe my advice wasn’t so prudent. lol

It would appear Lu isn’t going to hear the “street beat” this summer…. more like the “patter of little feet…”

I know she’s frustrated that she’s not getting any “Quality time” with Q, but….

The fork in the road for many teens. Get paid or get laid? Work or party? "Can’t serve two masters – - – ". Maybe not so severe for Luann, but her decisions set the pattern for her life.

Don’t blame everything on Frank/Nancy. I’ve seen children reared supposedly the same way (or at least similarly), who turn out completely different. One soaks up what you try to impart, while the other lets it roll off like water off a duck’s back.

No wonder they have good communication – Mom’s for real. No empty platitudes for her.*P.S. I found that I violated by exclamation mark fast yesterday when I put one after “Congratulations” on a card. So do I have to continue for another week?

Prudence is a virtue, and for sure Luann should start developing some. Her self-examination here could be an important moment for the future of her relationships with Quill, with Nancy and Frank, with her other age-cohort chums, and with herself….

Making sure you have a free place to stay would be prudent, and if you go to NYC with Quill Frank might not let you have that free place when you get home. Puddles doesn’t seem phased by any of this drama!

You might be right, usually when a cartoon character is sleeping there is a “z” over them. RIP Puddles, we hardly knew ye…

As it stands it appears that Nancy is just as stupid as Luann is when it comes to money. This would make sense though, they don’t appear to have had any sort of college savings for their kids. . . . . "-——————————————NO ! Not at all !Nancy and Frank are not stupid about money.They had enough money to buy Mrs. Horner’s house for Brad (and they now get rent from T J too). They probably have some to invest in the Warehouse, though depending on T. J. for more.

1. Who is paying for community college, if not Frank and Nancy? Whatever money Luann is earning at the after school program for kids would not be enough to pay for tuition, even at a community college.2. A married couple with kids is always counseled to save for their retirement first. College loans and scholarships are available (although not as much as they used to be). But there are no scholarships for retirement.3. A ‘stupid’ couple could not have enough money to buy or get a mortgage for their own home, let alone buy the home of a neighbor.4. Now that you have called two female cartoon characters ‘stupid’ because they don’t seem to agree with your money management program, please tell us if there are any female cartoon characters who meet your standards of money management. (Tiffany doesn’t count, since her money management program is ‘Daddy’.)

Luann has in the past been quite upset when Quill put his career/acting before her. How could she think it is ok for her to put head councilor at summer camp ahead of spending time with him?

Also noted, Dez looks lighter in today’s flashback. Colorist error, or another example of The Whitening? . . . . . "-————————-Does psychotic fear of not being “politically correct” mean than all characters must suffer a “whitening.” , If so, it’s IRONIC to the max..Yet this happened to Delta and Rosa, and may happen to Sun if we ever get her back. .So we give Chinese and Japanese big noses like in The Duplex and big round googly eyes like Barney Google, make all skin pale (even the Italianate T.J.). .So being politically correct means (for some) that all human characteristics have to be forced into a whitey stereotype , since anything else must be by definition insulting and repulsive.

Greg cannot himself fight the “politically correct” hysteria. He may have to give into it to a degree to survive. He has already made many concessions. .Delta was a first a wild and mindlessly irresponsible “jive fanatic” with what some might think a stereotyped jazz-age “black” personality. Her entire nature was later turned around 180 degrees, and her personal quirk was made an extreme sensitivity to serving others..The “politically correct” hysteria continues to sweep through the land, outlawing diversity and even humor. Even as a cartoonist, Greg can’t totally avoid it. But let’s not try to force more blandness upon him. There are quite a few Asians on American campuses, let’s not try to stamp them out of our collective consciousness. Sun should be there.

At times like this Luann seems to have an IQ of about 75. Perhaps less. But that is humor, I suppose. .Dagwood’s Blondie used to be that dumb. Now Dagwood is the dumb one.

Someone has to be in the bottom third. Luann and Underdog are PROUD to make the top 3/4 possible.

Mea culpa — Colorist error. She’s supposed to have TJs skin color. Unfortunately, since the days of multiple consolidations in the syndicate support services biz, there’s no longer a dedicated QA/QC checkpoint to screen for the small stuff. I used to get flagged for using the wrong blonde hair color (Tiffany yellow for Toni yellow as an example) in the early days of dailies colorization, but now only the most obvious errors that can be caught in a quick glance are caught. Like whited out text or an egregious missed shape. But when pointed out, we make corrections for the archives and for future reprints. All colored files are prepared with the printed book in mind. Good catch!

That strip’s funny for so many reasons.

I think Nancy’s answer is spot-on for the mother of a someone Luann’s age. A young woman taking risks (a very measured risk, in this case) and exploring the world is a great idea… in the abstract.

Omgosh . . . Puddles <3 is soooooo incredibly cute in this old strip!! I love the scene with the butterfly on his nose, how adorable!!!

Puddles was very much alive and wagging his tail in the last panel of the April 5 strip, and chased a squirrel two weeks previous (the March 22 strip).

I know…. I wanted the OP to tell me his definition… It was also used regularly in the era of US Slavery (e.g. children of white owners and black slaves).

“Caucasian” is ancient and practically useless except among the common population. Just look up Caucasus Mountains.

I knew that too. :-) In my HS Anthropology class, If Homo Sapiens are the base species of “humans,” then the “races” are the three primary “sub-species.” Those sub-species being (using the terms in effect back then….):

1) “Negroid” – (Black, African , etc. etc. etc.)…

2) “Mongoloid” (Asian, Oriental)…

3) “Caucasian” (White, Russian, Scandanavian, etc.)

I don’t think they’re called that these days, but I do think the “division of 3” still stands, when genealogy/ancestry studies are done. Seemed that way when Henry Louis Gates did his “Finding your Roots” series….

there is no “mongoloids” someone from japan is usually much different than a Chinese(round eyes vs slanted) and ones from south of Vietnam toward Australia are closer to the Polynesian traits, and “Caucasian” includes Middle east Arabia and northern Africa including India peninsula

I’m not saying it’s better. I’m just saying that’s where we’re at as a society these days.
