Reminds me of that commercial, where the guy walks around with that look, cos he only had to do one pushup. Or that guy that only had to eat the one vegetable sprout. Or that lady who went into the refrigerator, ready to dig in to that bowl, containing only the one blueberry…
Did Brad mean 19 more reps to go…. Or 19 more days? – At this point, hearing that there’s “more to go”, Frank may sound like a Minion, and go… “Whaaaaat?” – Maybe Frank just likes to make sure that he doesn’t ruin a good thing. Maybe he wants to “protect his squat record”, and “go out on top”…
“Single Minded”“The First Strut Is The Deepest” (♫)“Cop A Squat”" Pick Up The Pace Put Down The Pace"**(….and step away from the salsa…)“Wait Four To Six Weeks For Delivery”“Feel The Burn… Gradually…”“Putting The Sighs In Exercise”“Repeti-Shun”“Veeta- Vita- Regimen”or“One Is The ‘Onlyest’ Number That You Could Ever Do” (♪)
I still like the gag where the guy decides to do push-ups. So he starts …“one”“two”“three”“four”… then he notices a young lady entering the room …“ninety-seven”“ninety-eight”“ninety-nine”“one hundred! Whew!”
And this, folks, is why exercise is silly. Squat slowly, then straighten back up. Anything you should have done while you were down there should now be finished. Doing it nineteen more times is just boring and pointless. And exercise will never make sense until they figure out a way to keep it from being boring and pointless. Something they have failed miserably to accomplish for at least the last hundred years.
In all seriousness, exercise is better when its fun or you have serious motivation to do the less fun bits correctly. Something bodyweight is good – acrobatics training, for example. Obviously if you find something outdoors fun and have access … kayaking, riding horses, skateboarding, rock climbing – actually indoor rock climbing is fun too when the gym is set up well, and safer! (Indoor skate parks exist too, though they’re less likely to be free than outdoor ones.)
The issues currently are education and access. The new obstacle course runs are very cool – more functional than many exercises, including just running, more fun, more variety. Lots of people don’t have good places to train for them though – and that could be an example of a more fun thing. Video games – Dance Dance Revolution and the like. There are some solutions which we need to improve access to, but I also agree with you that probably we need to find some more solutions as well. I’m not sure what else people want though -
We have dance type exercise, obstacle type, specific sports. I don’t know what else could make people feel “cool” in the I accomplished a lot way. I would imagine in fact we’re aiming at the less competitive less adrenaline junky set. So we have dance type stuff, theoretically kickboxing as well as a cross-over, and if you’re into it yoga and pilates, but those are harder to be into on your own, and if you were, you’d probably be doing them. There’s probably room for some more video games that would encourage fitness as a byproduct, but not everyone likes those either, and not everyone who likes them can play them (what if people live below you.)
There are more alternative things like hooping and poi, but not everyone has space in their house or nearby (NYC, Hong Kong, Tokyo) – there are literally millions of people there who won’t have space or money to invest in exercise, and are likely to live above other humans. We’re working on improving VR and simulators, that will help too.
But I am left with a curiosity about what would engage people that we haven’t yet done – I’m pretty sure there is something, but I don’t know what it is.
I have less motivation to find it because I already have my most loved sport and a few back-ups that I truly enjoy. I even have a few that I sometimes play socially – I don’t need more, exactly. I could use some to fill in gaps when I can’t get to the others, even though that’s a rarer situation – but its not the same level of motivation as “everything that could be exercise bores me”
When the Richard Simmons Show first aired in the 70’s, someone asked Richard how many leg lifts they should do and he said — a million. When the women laughed he responded that they didn’t get that big from 20 M&Ms.
Ginny… for me, the idea of Frank not being in particularly good shape is perfectly legitimate and normal… and a pretty good set-up for comedy. But, what I am a bit frustrated with is the portrayal that Frank, at his age, and with his pretty standard background… has apparently NO WORKING KNOWLEDGE about typical things that happen at a gym or in a workout. For me, yesterday and today’s events would have been “ok” if Frank were responding as he does in a “tongue-in-cheek” sort of fashion. But, it appears that yesterday and today are meant to be honest responses from Frank, which suggests he has absolutely no clue about what people do at a gym…. which seems IMO ludicrous for even the most ardent couch potato. To me, this arc is using in a broad, slap-stick sort of fashion, the “dopey Dad” / “doofus Dad” / “idiot Dad” portrayal that I think is not particularly funny or nice for fathers in general, and is not IMO good comedy. I am hoping that this week is the end of the Frank fitness arc. Even the buying the warehouse arc was better IMO.
I also tend to think that most couch potato sorts would be more inclined to OVERDO their first effort at the gym. It would have been IMO more interesting comedically if Frank had been gun-ho to overdo his workout, and Brad would have to work at keeping his father to a more realistic and normal first workout.
“Better warm up first.”*NG – Exactly! It’s going to hurt in the morning, so it’s key to ending every session feeling victorious as well as drained. Only that way will the newbie continue on.
“Dad-ly Squat”^Heh, heh!!! =“Pitching ‘WHOOO’!”_*^Perhaps a combination of Frank’s 2nd “strike”, and Ric Flair’s famous catchphrase (That is, if Frank’s starting to "feel his oats’)….
