LP and typewriters are with us as classic collectors items far more than everyday items. Yeah hipsters do like typing on typewriters for kicks but then they pull out their iPhones and that kills that. It’s true though typewriters are far less hackable than computers so they can make a comeback on a small scale for people who want that extra level of security.
how about a pc with no internet connection, and you install the text editor via cd (making aside the fact that according to apple, cds are not cool). or a wi-fi only tablet, and you turn off the wi fi (after downloading the text editor)
also, most linux distributions come with text editors and spread sheets included in the same install package, and many distributions can load from a cd (and run the text editor) without previous install, as did most pcs long time ago. So you can use an old pc and a cd with a bootable linux distribution without internet connection
in previous comment: “not people are geeks” → “not all people are geeks”. also, it does not mean it only applies to old pcs, this also can be done on new devices. For example, there is the new ‘chromebook’, which comes with ‘chrome os’. in chrome os all programs run as web pages and everything is stored ‘in the cloud’ (cliché word); this is the exactly opposite of what we want. But you can use one of those to load other linux version from a usb key (like the ones from previous comment, like ubuntu), and work without internet connection saving files in the local disk. Yet you can get those devices (chromebook) from less than $200, or the chromebook pixel with very nice specifications by a higher price
a last comment as to explain ‘what its got to do all that thing about linux with being snooped’. I will use * to separate in bullets, since this thing does not keep the space between paragraphs.
you would like to use current technology, but without the hassle of being snooped, like using a modern text editor, and being able to just press backspace when you mess up; this means running a decent program in a current deviceall the snooping (unless somebody has physical contact with the device) is made via internet. to communicate via internet you need an internet connection; this is either through a physical cable or radio waves. If you don’t attach a physical cable to your device, and there are no radios or the radios are turned off, then the data from your device can not go outside through any of those channels. This means that if there is no 3g or 4g radio in your mobile device, it can not send data trough 3g or 4g, and if the wi fi is turned off, then it can not send data through wi fi, likewise with the bluetooth.it is not enough that you are not ‘using the program’; for example, you may not be using a web browser, yet data is sent from your device all the time. Most programs send data about their usage statistics, most osses send data about what programs have you installed, web browsers send data about what type of content you watch, and even if you are not using some programs or are aware you have them installed, they are receiving requests all the time from internet. For example, you may not know what is ftp, but you have a program in your device that is open for ftp requests from the outside, and this may lead somebody to snoop files in your device. Even if that is the case, if all communication doors are closed, ftp can not receive or send datasince companies make deals with government agencies, you don’t really know when the info the device displays is real or not. For example, it may tell you that you have turned off your wi fi device, but it may not be the case. It may be that it is not using or enabled the public wi fi driver, but is using some other driver that just a few other programs use. In this case it may be better to use a system that is built from an open source, and has security policies known by the general publicsince if you decide to use your device int his way it means you loose some features that require internet connection (like updates), it means you have to use alternatives, like using cds to transfer data. Be aware that data may be leaked through those as well, so be ware where you place your cds and memory cards, usbs etc, so they don’t get infected; also, don’t use the most expensive equipment that requires to be constantly updated
I don’t know…. is it wrong that I am beginning to think of Melvin as a hero…. he is too cool to be pigeonholed by any form of conformity into anything he is not already innately wanting to do? In some ways this seems like a lesson we could all benefit from.
I was about to comment on the fact that with all the foregoing discussions, not one person specifically commented on Carolina (as in “Wow!”) – I realize, of course, this is not the real Carolina but rather Melvin’s dream image of her. At least Christopher’s comment just previous to mine makes mention!

Fitting, perhaps accidentally, but most people dream in black and white . . .

If this was from Carolina’s perspective, it would definitely be a nightmare.

Typewriters (the manual kind) would be useful in an EMP attack though for sure.

I could see myself going out of circulation for one woman, if it was the right woman. And certainly if it was a fine foxy bride like Carolina here!
