Congratulations on a good run, Mr. Meyer. I wish you the best of luck in your writing career. I also applaud you stepping away before you become Beetle Bailey or Hi and Lois.
I will really miss this strip. It was often very funny and always thoughtful. I think what I liked best was that it took longer than 10 seconds to read, and that it made you think. Good luck on you future efforts. While I will miss the new material I look forward to the reruns.
I’m sorry to see you end the strip. I’m a recent visitor to go comics and to your humor. Thank you, I wish you could do both but I imagine creating a regular occurring comic strip with unique ideas is very demanding.I look forward to seeing your past comics for the first time, I think.
My mood now matches my icon. How are we supposed to replace the intelligence, thoughtfulness, and profound insight we have found here? Good luck on your new projects!
At panel one I was bummed because I had just discovered this strip a couple of months ago. By panel four I was okay – everything old is new again. If it works for Peanuts, For Better or Worse and Doonesbury it works for Basic Instructions!
Aw !! I, too, am fairly new to your Comic, but Good uck on your new Path & Thanks for rerunning the old ones, so I can keep reading :)ps – I have, occasionally, read the fine text if I noticed it there !
The Five Stages1. No no no, of course the strip is not ending!2. I’m really ticked about this strip ending, Scott!3. Look, I’ll buy all your books if you don’t end this strip!4. The strip is ending, I can’t go on!5. Oh, it’s all right, I’ll be OK with the repeats!
Quite a bummer. I have really enjoyed your strip over the years (especially the whole idea of “The Knifeketeer”) . Hope the change in work is satisfying and I look forward to seeing the results.
You are one talented strip writer (and a mediocre illustrator). If your fiction is half as good as your comic has been, success is guaranteed. Oh, and I was joking about the graphics—they are ideally suited to the humor here and serve to perfectly accent whatever wisdom you happen to be beating us with at the moment…
Oh dear, what will I look forward to three times a week now? I first learned of your comic from Cake Wrecks, believe it or not, many years ago. I wish you the best of luck!
Well, you were quite a ways from ending up like “The Lockhorns” “Heathcliff” or “Love is” but I can understand. Like Bill Watterson, you know to quit while you’re ahead. Thanks for all the great strips! When I first encountered your strip, the dialog was so brilliant I thought you might be Kyle Baker (that’s very high praise!) and you kept that brilliance thoughout.Good luck with the writing!
So long, and thanks for all the fish, Scott. I bought your first two books and will buy the rest. I only had a couple years in on this strip, I think, so it will be fun to read them in order.
If you’ve never heard of the news column “This is True” by Randy Cassingham, you should look it up; I think you’d like his sense of humor.
Wish you luck. If, like Arthur Conan Doyle, you find that Basic Instructions is the thing you do that will best pay the bills, come back again. And the repeats are a good idea — I’ve only been reading this for a couple of years, so the first four years will be new to me.
But… But… I brought desk top calendars to keep this strip alive!!! Who needs desk top calendars these days?! Sigh… Good luck, Scott! Look forward to the novels!
Awww….. another one of my favorites going the way of the dodo. Well, thank you so much for the laughs, Scott. They have been greatly appreciated. I hope that you do well in your novel endeavor.
Selfishly, I’m okay with it because I only recently discovered this strip, so it will be years and years before you post anything I’ve ever seen before! Have fun with the writing, and thanks for your work
Sure sorry to hear that. I have enjoyed your work and will miss it. You and Jon Stewart of the Daily Show were two sites I never missed a day without viewing and now you are both gone in the same month, at least regards new material. I’m sure it was great news for the stuffed shirts of the world, but bad news for the rest of us.
Well, Peanuts is in its 500th year of reruns and Garfield is on its 4,000th iteration of the three jokes it uses so I guess we’ll survive.
Someone made a mistake telling cartoonists they were free to try other avenues of creative endeavor (well except maybe for whoever does “frank & ernest”…someone please get the writer a different job.)

Well, this is a crappy bit bit of news. Novel? Who the hell reads novels anymore? It better have Rocket Hat as a character.
