Looks to me like Quill handled the conversation with Pru while standing right next to Luann. It’s probably safe to assume his side of the conversation didn’t include a lot of “Yes”. “Uh-huh”. “No”. “Not Now”. and so forth, so I’m guessing there really wasn’t anything for Luann to get wound up about — which she doesn’t seem to be doing, anyway. Good for her, she handled a sticky situation with poise and stability.

@nextframe: You may not have been here when Belinda bananaramalamadingdong was doing her thing, but she would wait, with fingers poised over the keyboard, to post “first” every night. She almost never participated in the conversation, just wanted us all to see that she was the first one here.

Now I’m a pretty First Amendment kind of guy when it comes to freedom of speech issues. I wouldn’t limit someone’s right to do that, but it does strike me as unfortunate when I run up against folks who confuse “having something to say” with “having to say something”. They aren’t the same thing, and I wish more people understood the difference.

But hey, if it makes you feel good, knock yourself out. I will defend to the death your right to make yourself look like a twit.

It’s a little known fact (okay, maybe not) that "Take Five’ by Dave Brubeck certainly did not take five minutes. It actually took 5 minutes and 28 seconds. – Even if ten minutes had elapsed, they can go pretty quickly. It’s funny how a workday can seem to “drag on” slow-ly, but the lunch and 15 minute breaks can zip by in a blink ….– Maybe Manezone meant some other “Ten”, besides “minutes”. Like maybe “Take ten steps away from the stage, and no more than that!” or, “Take ten selfies, and get the word out about this production, because the fliers won’t be out in time!” or “Take ten bites at the refreshment table, only!” …or maybe she was expressing a brief vocal lament, like: “Take ten items or less in the express lane, people! How hard is that to understand?”

Lu better watch out for Pru! It doesn’t bode well that she knows which production Quill is working on – it means they’ve been communicating before the accidental text. Also if he texted her accidentally it was because she was at the top of his messages.

This just in: Sun has called on Greg to quit.

According to Wikipedia, “Chop chop” is a phrase rooted in Cantonese. It spread through Chinese workers at sea and was adopted by English seamen. “Chop chop” means “hurry, hurry” and suggests that something should be done now and without any delay. The word “chopsticks” likely originates from this root.

Sun and one billion others think “Chop, chop” is a blatant reminder of humiliating servitude and a host of other abuses imposed upon her people.

@IamJayBluEThe title of the Desmond/Brubeck piece refers not to the length of the piece, but rather to the unique Balkan rhythm it uses: an 11/16 rhythm which is often simplified as 5 unequal beats. Example: A=heavy beat, b=light beat, thus: AbAbAbbAbAb, 11 total, is often counted in 5, with the middle Abb held longer than the rest (one two THREE four five). Thus the piece “Take Five” which fits the 11/16 beat perfectly.

I was a Balkan dancer and performer for nearly thirty years in Berkeley California, where Brubeck lived for a time and no doubt heard Balkan music, as there were Balkan dance groups everywhere in the Bay Area during the 1960s and 70s.

5Implausible, you stated:“Quill likely messages Pru all the time, as they are now friends. He is, of course, oblivious to how this affects Luann.”In my manner of thinking, Quill has this one spot on…. he should be and should continue to be oblivious (or at least pretending to be oblivious) to Luann’s jealousy about Pru. As of this point, he has not done anything wrong, and therefore, he should not have to worry about such things. It is Luann’s jealousy that is a problem, and it is HER problem. Now, obviously, if Quill did “something” that was an indication that Pru was more than a friend, that is a different ball of wax. But, until that point, Luann is in the wrong about her “jealousy” reaction. But, also again, IMO it was acceptable for Luann to be miffed about the text message taking precedence over her real-world message in yesterday’s comic. That she was only mildly miffed… well, I talked about that yesterday.

Well, he and Karen have actually mentioned in interviews that they do look at the first few comments here (they’ve actually used the word “skim”). But the way Greg expresses it, seems to also indicate that he does it with his “eyes closed”, in a sense. He has stated that he doesn’t want to fall into the trap of having someone say “He took my idea!” and also he has said that he likes to keep the “world of Luann” as “real as possible” (of course, in the relative way) and has actually used the term “keeping the curtain up” between he and the audience (he graciously meets with people, of course, but he expressed that term in the sense of “not reading everything people have to say”) , to keep Luann as “fresh and sincere as possible”…

It was rather rude of Quill to ignore Luann and devote his attention to his phone. That’s the point of text messages, they can be responded to when there’s time. One can glance at a text in a few seconds to see if it’s something urgent. Now the break is over and all Quill did was read his messages. I’d be pissed at him if I were Luann. It’s not the fact that it was another woman, it’s that they only had ten minutes and Quill totally ignored her for some messages that could have been read later.

If Quill had any romantic feelings for Pru, I think he would be careful not to mention her whenever Luann is around. He treats his contact with her so casually, there seems to be nothing going on.

Still waiting for Greg’s “curve ball” with Prudence. Dez turned out to be a Voodoo mama, Viper and Sun just had brief “walk ons”. And now, will Pru be worth the wait? I don’t understand how a comic strip that is so dull can be so addictive. I like it, but I can’t say why. Nothing ever happens. Come on: three months in Peru with a beautiful, hot girl, one night in a dorm room with another hot girl wearing only a robe, lights out in a prop room……….nothing, nothing, nothing.

Luann is only interested in ‘relationships’ per se… the minutiae of it all… a lot of talk about nothing.. It’s the only thing that makes her eyes light up. She doesn’t talk about anything of substance with Quill. Whatever happened to her interest in singing, stage design, art? She needs to become a more interesting person or else Quill will get more and more distracted by others, e.g. Pru. Quill looks relieved that Ms. Lasagna face is calling him back to rehearsal.

This has been a strange arc… meandering… starts out at the firehouse…. then a Toni /Brad wedding date… maybe the latter is meant to draw contrast with the decline in Luann and Quill as an item. Luann may have thought that all this wedding talk might get Quill on that train of thought. But it’s having the opposite effect.

    HeChop-chop

    Meaning

    Be quick; hurry up.

    Origin

This little reduplicated term has its origins in the South China Sea, as a Pidgin English version of the Chinese term k’wâi-k’wâi. The earliest known citation of chop-chop in print is from the English language newspaper that was printed in Canton in the early 19th century – The Canton Register, 13th May 1834:

    We have also… ‘chop-chop hurry’.

A slightly fuller account was printed two years later, in a monthly journal which was produced by and for American missionaries in Canton – The Chinese Repository. In January 1836 it contained an article headed ‘Jargon Spoken in Canton’, which included:

“Chop-chop – pidgin Cantonese phrase for ‘Hurry up!’”

The adoption of the chop-chop pronunciation was influenced by the long-standing use of ‘chop’ and ‘chop-up’ by English seamen, with the meaning ‘quick’ or ‘hurried’. This usage dates back to at least the 16th century, when it was commonly used in the strange expression – ‘chopping-up the whiners’. This referred to gabbling through prayers in order to get them finished quickly; for example, from Philip Stubbes’ The anatomie of abuses, 1583:

Which maketh them [Reading ministers] to gallop it over as fast as they can, and to chop it up with all possible expedition, though none understand them.

The seafaring usage of ‘chop up’ referred specifically to a sudden change in the wind and the waves. This also gives us of the term ‘choppy’ for turbulent water and is a constituent part of the expression ‘chop and change’. ‘Chop-up’ was recorded by Sir William Monson in Naval Tracts, 1642:

“The Wind would chop up Westerly.”

chop-chopOne of the many other meanings of the word chop is ‘to eat; to snap up’ – that is, ‘to take into the chops’ (the jaws/cheeks/mouth). It would be a reasonable conjecture that this was the source of the word ‘chop-sticks’. Reasonable, but not correct. It is the 17th century sailor’s slang use of ‘chop’ to mean ‘quick’ which led to chop-sticks. The nimbleness of the Chinese in their eating without the aid of forks caused the seamen to coin the term ‘quick-sticks’ or chop-sticks’. William Dampier recorded this in 1699 in A New Voyage Round the World:

“At their ordinary eating they [the Chinese] use two small round sticks about the length and bigness of a Tobacco-pipe. They hold them both in the right hand, one between the fore-finger and thumb; the other between the middle-finger and fore-finger… they are called by the English seamen Chopsticks.”

This is in line with the original Chinese meaning. The Chinese name for chop-sticks is k’wâi-tsze, which translates literally as ‘nimble boys’ or ‘nimble ones’.

Apart from in travelogues of the Far-East, there is little recorded mention of chop-sticks in English until the mid 20th century. The term ‘quicksticks’ however, did make it back to Britain in the 19th century, as an imperative meaning ‘hurry up; do it without delay’. John C. Hotten recorded this in A dictionary of modern slang, 1859:

“Quick sticks, in a hurry, rapidly; ‘to cut quick sticks’, to be in a great hurry.”

George Carlin had a routine about how the terminology changed from “Shell Shock” to “Battle Fatigue” to “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder”, adding more syllables to make it sound more clinical, and less traumatic for the victim. It wasn’t presented as comedy, this was Carlin talking straight.
