Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for December 27, 2015
Transcript:
dad: i still can't believe we bought this old warehouse and turned it into a funky place. what a scary, costly, exhausting ride it's been! mom: yeah. there are plenty of easier ways we could have acted out a mid-life crisis dad: we picked the right one. mom: oh, yeah.

Iām sure that Frank is delighted Nancy didnāt walk out of the house in that new wig, shoes and outfitā¦ ā And I guess Nancy is relieved that āSpleen Simmonsā never wasā¦
RolloTheGrouch about 9 years ago
I donāt believe it either, because they didnāt do it.
Argythree about 9 years ago
-I thought it was Frankās midlife crisis, not Nancyās. And the more typical response of a guy to a midlife crisis is usually buying a red Corvette and running off with a woman young enough to be his daughter, isnāt it? Maybe thatās the attraction of Pru for Frankā¦

A moment of mutual respect and love for Frank and Nancy. But will The Fuse live up to its promise, or will it turn into a money-sucking failure?

I wonder if theyāll regret their ādreamā once Mr. Gray shows up to collect.

Oh, so I guess finishing in your former career, retiring then living comfortably for the REST of Your Life was just OUT of the Question, uh Frank?

Since they are comicsā characters they can afford to blow all their money and face bankruptcy.

āFrank trying to convince Nancy they should do itā¦itās his idea.ā^I didnāt say it wasnāt his idea. ā āHowever, since they are financially tied together, it is addressed as āweā, because Nancy has to say yes for it to happen.ā^Yet, Nancy is the one Shannon pulls the arm ofā¦ and may I note: without any objection from Nancy. If she wasnāt on board with it, if she werenāt claiming it as her own as well, then she would have said (as I said, in my above posts), āItās all Frankās doing!ā. If she didnāt want to invest in that, she wouldnāt have āwent along with itā. She would have either objected, or proclaimed in protest, that she intended to ārefuse her halfā (i.e,., not a literal āhalfā, but a show of protest/objection, to which there would be a crisis of conflict in the household [which Iām pretty sure is your angle, any way you slice it]). ā Weāve even had this discussion before, soā¦.

Perhaps Mr. Gray will offer to buy them out in February.

I donāt get the whole story line about The Fuse. At least why the Evanses are lavishing so much time and energy and so many dei ex machina (I looked it up!) on a pet project of two secondary characters.
The gocomics blurb about the strip says that āLUANN is about the trials of becoming a young adult: the hilarity and drama, triumphs and flops, friendships and rivalries.ā Not anymore. Actually, these days the title character does nothing but worry about losing her boyfriend. The Evanses need to come up with some ideas for her.

I agree that I would have preferred to see Luann college stories. Luann has been in college for a year and a half now, and yet not one of her fellow students has been identified by a real name (I donāt think āMr. Jockā and āMr. Gothā count as real names). In fact, the name of her college has never been mentioned. (People here usually call it āPitts Junior College,ā but that name has not actually appeared in the strip.)

āThe failure with this story is they dragged it out.āHere you go againā¦.

It wasnāt costly. This multi-million dollar purchase and renovation required Frank to put up only $70K ā of TJās money, not his. Even though nothing was mentioned about it at the time, some bank then apparently kicked in all the rest, just because thatās what banks always do. And as for hard work, Mr. Gray did all that for free, because thatās what friends do (and in this case, so do total strangers). And they got their opening show staged for free, because thatās what crazy show-business people always do, too. Life is good, is what Iām saying. Or scripting is poor, if you want to look at it that wayā¦

āJust clarifying that Nancy is in the sidecar with TJ. This is Frankās idea, Frankās midlife crisis, Frankās baby, even if multiple people are financially invested.ā^And yet, the pictures (along with the words) tell the complete storyā¦. sheās made his dream her dream. -As Iāve expressed before, it doesnāt matter who has the idea first. It doesnāt matter who has the most money. When two or more people venture into a business together, they all have to be on board, or else take their share elsewhere. They each assume the risks, they each partake of the āgloryā. You can clarify who invests what, or who has the idea first, but in the end, Nancy isnāt saying āitās his dreamā. Sheās been saying: āItās our dreamā. Thatās what the speech balloons have uttered, thatās what the pictures drawn have depicted. Not even getting ālast wordsā in is changing that fact.
JayBluE about 9 years ago
āall of TJās money will be gone and he may very well be on the hook for part of the loan for the remaining balance on the warehouse.ā^And Mr. Gray can call in a favor, to bring āthe hookā inā¦.
JayBluE about 9 years ago
āFrank had the idea ; together they share the dream.ā^Agreed!

I would say the fact that she didnāt get a āfull scholarshipā would mean that her grades affected her getting into Moony (among the other factors), though it was initially one of the choices hinted at as a possible school for Luann (though Bernice was able to have the grades for her to get a āfull rideā)ā¦ ā
BJShipley1 about 9 years ago
Eh, I wouldnāt go so far as to call it a āgood message for everyoneā as sheās been basically spinning her wheels for the past year and a half and is no closer to deciding what her focus will be. Perhaps she should try taking more than just the one art classā¦
RolloTheGrouch about 9 years ago
āPerhaps she should try taking more than just the one art classā¦āLuanniverse may be caught in another time loop.In the real world, if Luann were planning to move beyond āJunior Collegeā she should have already been considering & applying to transfer to a 4-year college. No sign of any such activity, and thereās been no sign of any class other than Zeboās art class for quite some time. Luann may be wind up being in her first year of āJunior Collegeā for quite some time.Or maybe sheāll just be working for Pru at The Fuse (for free, naturally) and obsessing about Quill, and her college studies will fade into the background.
Argythree about 9 years ago
SPOILER ALERT
Info emerges about the mysterious Prudence. Will that info change Luannās mind about her fears, or is the info intended to trick Luann into acceptance of ācompetitionā?
Or maybe Luann will get a great job offer as a result of working with kids after school, and will head somewhere else altogetherā¦

Itās wonderful when a couple can rest on their (and their kidsā and friendsā) achievements, & laurels for a few moments, now and then. Hey, this goes well with the ātry new thingsā theme of Sundayās Calvin & Hobbes.
