I lived with a fire place for 20 years…They are wonderful, on a cold wet day or a snowstorm, nothing better or more bone warming. than a log fire….But if I ever have another one, it will have to be gas…The wood gets to be a lot of work after a while…..
With a gas log there would be no little critters or creatures crawling out of the logs while Arlo and Janis have their little tryst on the carpet in front of the fire.
In my mind, nothing beats a real fire. Yes, it is more work. But I find that things that you have to work for are more satisfying.Just compare homemade cookies with store bought.
Five cord of wood stacked in the basement …. waiting for it to get cold here in northern Maine. Three cord stacked outside that I use to heat my shop. The wood stove there has been running for about two weeks. Right now a wood pellet stove is keeping the house warm enough. When it really gets cold and stays below zero is when the basement wood furnace gets lit for the winter.
That’s it. A gas log gives a nice mood, but they don’t put out any heat. When the power goes out, I want to be warm, or I will get “moody”. (And then some.)
I have seven cords set for winter – We have both a propane furnace and a wood furnace, as well as a fireplace, and a wood stove in my pole shed workshop.
Yes, lots of work, dirty – But also good exercise and wood heats a house through and through at -20F.
Janis, it is a male thing (note Arlo’s eyes) you could never understand. I finally got rid of that hated gas grill and went back to a real charcoal fire. Cooks better, taste better, and I get to demonstrate the male art of a making perfect bed of glowing coals.
I also supplement the Wood in my fireplace with all that “Junk” Mail someone keeps stuffing in my mailbox.
My only complaint is that it’s all been soaked in Flame Retardant so the Post Office doesn’t have to worry about losing entire warehouses full of mail.
It still Burns, but you have to have a couple Logs burning underneath the pile of paper to keep it going.

(I think that this is the point of the strip. Not positive, though.)

Nothing’s ever fine.
Can’t be happy with what they have.

Gas logs? No snap, crackle or pop!!! Besides splitting wood is good exercise.

Somebody slap that girl! A fireplace is a place for a FIRE. A gas “fireplace” is the equivalant of leaving a burner on on a gas stove.

I love prepping my fireplace and I was the one who split wood at my house — and just about everything else, too..

Janis you have too many clothes on. they are bunching up around your neck and restricting blood flow to the brain.
