So Holly and Lyn live in a McMansion in a gated community that is built with neighborhoods stacked on top of each other high rise style. This would suggest that the community is built in an area where land was at a premium (possibly near the center of town). If land was cheaper, they wouldn’t go to the material costs of building something like this.
I may have missed it from someone else, but if this is AFTER the encounter with the monster, why haven’t they mutated as yet? I always guessed the monster was the policeman mutated, but maybe the policeman died from the encounter with that monster and the mutagen hadn’t become extremely contagious as yet.Did the beginning of the war cause the mutagen to become highly contagious? I’m wondering because of the flashback into Sparkplug’s pas showed people being normal until just before the missiles hit.
We have speculated that this is after the encounter with the monster, but we haven’t actually seen that is so. Having said that, I would speculate that the mutagen was not airborne and therefore particularly contagious at the point Lyn and Holly first encountered it. Perhaps Lyn is immune and since the thing didn’t touch Holly she didn’t catch it.
In the Flaskback story, Flask noted that the Topsiders considered existing mutants (and Typhoid Maries) to be “plague rats” that carried the mutagen and fought to exterminate them in order to end the plague so they could walk around without their suits and not need to fear the mutagen. The fact that Holly and Lyn were able to survive their encounter with the monster mutation free suggests that it wasn’t able to create airborne viruses on its own. That could be a matter of it not getting to the communicable stage at that time, though it could probably create them at a later date. or that it was not able to create airborne virus parts and never would. That would suggest that the Topsider claim that the mutants were sustaining the virus is a crock of Shihtzu.
I just noticed an interesting bit of symmetry. If you look at Holly in panel 1 and Wally in panel 3 their arms seem to be crossed. I don’t know much about body language but crossed arms are supposed to signify defensiveness and closing oneself off from other things or people.
Forest Glen Fivesounds like a band or political group..Where the house are all made of ticky tacky and the all look the same and are stacked on top of each other. The Earth of Endtown seems to be an alternate Earth.I lived in L.A. for a while and you get used to how big it is eventually. These mega – mega plexes like Wally’s hometown must have been far more than just 2 centuries old. given the time it would take to build that large a city up.
I always thought it was probably more of an “I am legend” situation than what the topsiders think
For those who don’t know, in the actual book the vampire virus becomes so widespread because they burned the bodies of the infected (also maybe the mosquito population? Idk).
Since the virus was apparently some sort of extremophile, burning it didn’t kill it off and it spread through the ashes carried by the wind, which wound up in peoples lungs and, well you know the rest. However up until that point, it had only been spread via blood and saliva (like rabies) and was reasonably well contained.
If the mutant virus was something similar, vaporizing everyone who was infected probably led to the mass infections we’ve seen in flashbacks (ps can someone link that?)
It also explains why Topsiders are always wearing their suits, even in what SHOULD be a reasonably sterile environment.
West Forest Glen Five sounds like another debtors’ community, or other type of ghetto. Like the way Holly’s story seems to be going, Wally may have taken an Apex job to get out of that hellhole, with disturbing compromises.Apex may have strategically recruited many of its employees and associates from troubled communities, with the expectation that the recruits would be reluctant to question and resist company policies to avoid going back “home”.
I seem to have been wrong in speculating that all the cars were trying to escape the city. I guess this is just regular air traffic, and that it’s too early for panic.
Anyway, the idea that this flashback is taking place subsequent to the cop incident is still a valid one. The most likely explanation for the “windfall” is as a payoff from Apex.
While I’m not as versed as everyone it seems to me from the first panel that Holly is in the front seat and Lyn is in the driver’s seat. You can see Holly’s profile with her arms crossed (or at least the left hand on right arm.) Also, I took from the start of the arc that when they went into the half-buried ship, something took them and has invaded their minds to make them see these scenes from the past. My guess is they are being shown something so they can maybe do something to fix things.
(And before I leave marxum, it would not supprise me at all if he’s the robotic “Petey” from before with his memories restored. ((IF)) that’s the case, suddenly Flask’s reaction and kissing him make total sense. Her lover repeating a past comment “No rest for the wicked” would explain her shocked reaction and the smooch that followed. And ironicly enough, make her transition to a past life with him all the more befitting.)
As for the incident timing, look at the care they’re driving/flying. In the previous flashback, Lyn and Holly where wheel bound on a concreet road. Here they’re in a flying vehicle. You probably don’t have a skybound ride without some cash to support it. Basicly, they two received “shut up” money and work.
As for Holly’s child. This is christmas just before WW3. We know said war of endtown didn’t last a few hours like Halflife 2’s brief flash takeover. (Sparkplug’s Prologue and aging are proof of this.) By the time the mutations go widespread, Holly’s baby will have been born. Probably no more then 3 or 4 years old at most. In other words, her baby was out of the womb and possibly awake when whatever is transforming them struck.
She said “I lost the baby.” The use of that particular phrase generally goes with a miscarriage or still birth. Otherwise she would likely have said “So and So, (the baby’s name) died” And I believe WW3 was a very fast war once the bombs started, so its unlikely the baby was born after the war since Wally made note it was the Christmas before WW3 in this view of Holly’s life, and the mutants were already beginning to appear.Sparkplugs prologue in no way show any different, and the fact he’s aged has more to do with living alone for 7 years with the knowledge that he was too late to save his wife and child, killed his wife after she killed their child, and is a pariah forever.
The evidence seems to suggest that until Apex started vaporizing the mutants, it wasn’t very contagious. So the Topsiders are the ones who are, in fact, causing the virus to continue to be a contagion.
Who or what is Marxum? I’d like to see Kirbee as a little girl in a cowboy hat. who and when posted it?From the Al and Gustine encounter with Hillside it didn’t seem much bigger than a smallish town.Even doubled over. and no sign of very tall communities. This is really interesting. I got my big book( Endtown 3 .2 yesterday and have been enjoying it throughly.
There seems to be quite a pollution problem. And driving on a flat plane is hard enough, when you have to see who is also approaching from below or above would probably increase the likelihood of car accidents and road rage. They were really into large building signs. I was wondering what it was saying too.

I find myself wondering about the effect of being exposed to the mutagen while pregnant would be. Nothing good, I’m guessing.

Wait.
If Wally can’t remember his past…
And I don’t think we’ve ever seen what he looked like when human…
See what I’m getting to?

Interesting response from Wally about his old residence. This may also be a trip for him to clear out his closet.

What about Kirbee? She seems unfamiliar with the city. Was she (a) a country girl? (b) very young when the apocalypse happened? © born after the apocalypse and grew up very fast? (d) none of the above?
