♡ Good morning Starshine!☆ I’ve got a name♡ Working nine to five☆ Please Mr. Custer, I don’t wanna go♡ Working on the chain gang☆ They’re coming to take me away, Ha Ha♡ Ah, breaker one-nine, this here’s the Rubber Duck☆ There’s got to be a morning after♡ So let the sun shine in face it with a grin.
So, apparently Putty Puss is saner than he is acting. And (unless I’m mistaken), the next story line is supposed to be Notta Fallar’s. Putty Puss may be preparing to portray Purdy Fallar, or perhaps Blaze Rize (on the off-chance she was actually killed by Notta). But, there could be thousands of other story ideas. That’s what makes this version of Dick Tracy SO interesting! I can’t help but to speculate, but it’s wonderful to just sit back and enjoy the story. THANK YOU FOR THAT’ TEAM TRACY!
Putty Puss doesn’t seem to show any effects, but the first time I read this it looked like that Taser was just recently used. But since Putty is OK it must just be at the ready. Judging by those shooting stars and sparks the officer may be in more danger from that thing than anyone else. It may be a defective Taser!
Don’t those asylum boys read the comics? Letting Putty Puss out, on his own?! This won’t end well for someone! The patient is as looney as they come, or putting on a good act. Either way, this is the start of something very bad!
Good morning, VB, and other early birds of a Tracy feather!
I meant to post this last night but was busy and didn’t get around to it.
From the Dick Tracy Wikia re Putty Puss: “He had acquired a verbal tic of speaking in song lyrics, especially when agitated or in the act of committing a crime.”
Perhaps he is both agitated and contemplating committing a crime in this case.
So (as Neil pointed out) here’s an inmate who is escorted by a guard with a Taser – getting into a cab, with only a verbal instruction to be back by dinner time? Come on! Really?
… or it’s from an episode of “The Flintstones” where Fred dreams that Pebbles and Bamm Bamm become singing stars …
“Open up Your Heart (and Let the Sunshine in)” was written by Stuart Hamblen in 1954 and recorded by The Cowboy Church Sunday School the following year (listen), but most people are more familiar with the version in that 1965 Flintstones episode (called “No Biz Like Show Biz”). The 1955 version was recorded at 33 1/3 rpm to be played at 45 rpm so it sounds like children.
Putty Puss has been hired for a job. It may be that he is wearing an ankle bracelet with tracking capability. If he strays from the job location he loses work-release privileges. That said, I agree that Putty Puss is being given more leeway than we might have expected. What’s troubling me is the nature of his game.
I watched it when it ran on prime time tv! I was around 7 – 8. Very clear to me. Loved the song and the singers.
I was only about 5, so I probably only remember it from reruns, but I remember that song very clearly. Apparently, it was sung by Rebecca Page (as Pebbles) and her mother Ricky Page (as Bamm Bamm), who later became “The Bermudas” and then “The Majorettes.”
JPuzzleWhiz suggested to Neil Wick, Abner’s theme song could be “Monster Mash” by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and his Crypt Kicker Five.-———————————————————————-.How did you find out?
In the original story, Putty Puss also imitated President Reagan, Albert Einstein, and David Letterman. Locher’s ability as a caricaturist (from his editorial cartoon experience) came in very handy in the original tale.

So that’s the infamous Putty Puss eh? He seems to be insane….and with his talent this story could go virtually any where.

Does that make me pathetic, old or very well read?

Also …
Putty Puss’ exit oddly reminds me of this rather famous song.

Odd.. Putty Puss wasn’t THAT messed u p when we last saw him..after killing Cueball…wonder what turn of events put him in this current state?
tsull2121 over 8 years ago
unless of course he is just acting the part…which would make more sense. it’s easier to get out of an asylum than out of a prison

Everyone here knows I have certain songs for certain villains. SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL is what I use for Mr. Bribery.

Ahh, so Putty Puss works for Bribery. I suppose he was hired to help Notta get her revenge?

@Neil Wickalthough, if he’s not dangerous, why do they need a Taser?-———-It could be SOP.
You could be right. Maybe they just have to have that at the ready, regardless of the patient.therese_callahan2002 over 8 years ago

I’m assuming he’s deemed to be non-violent, despite the armed Taser in the doctor’s hand.Neil Wick over 8 years ago

Thanks for the strips from the 80s. Putty Puss is definitely a dangerous element since he can disguise himself at a moment’s notice, if need be.

Sydney can correct me on this but I believe that this is the 4th appearance of Putty Puss in the strip.

The song Putty Puss is singing in Panel 1 is from Time of the Season:

The song he’s singing in Panel 3 Sympathy for the Devil:

And as a bonus, even though he isn’t singing it, the guard is quoting from the song Happy Trails:
