I wanted to find a link between the song “Beautiful Stranger” and Dick Tracy, aside from just thematically. Then I realized that it is a Madonna song, and Madonna was in the Warren Beatty Dick Tracy movie!
Don’t look now, but it is only a matter of time before our Beautiful Stranger becomes a Beautiful loser !
But just who is this beautiful stranger being referred to? It seems that pseudo-Dick Tracy is in love with Notta Fallar. If that’s the case, I agree that Notta is bound to be the “loser” sooner or later.
And anyone who knows Tracy will start to detect differences.
The potential problem is that people who don’t know Tracy well will not detect the differences. It seems to me that the last time Putty Puss imitated Tracy it was hard to tell which one was real.
A quick history review for those who may be unfamiliar with Notta’s complicated relationship with Dick Tracy….Notta originally hated Tracy for foiling her and her now-deceased husband’s scheme to secure $100,000 in orbiting money.Later, she was taken prisoner by Piggy Butcher, who abused her and turned her into his personal slave. Life became so unbearable that she and her husband contacted Dick Tracy, who (along with Moon Maid) eventually rescued the couple from almost certain death. At that point, Notta seemed to admire Tracy.A few months later, Notta and her husband (now out on bail) hunted down Piggy and dragged him back to their apartment to kill him. Before the couple could complete their revenge, Tracy and Sam showed up at the apartment and killed Notta’s husband in a wild shootout (Piggy accidentally died of strangulation). Notta was sent to prison and blames Tracy for killing her husband, even though the latter started the firefight.A few months after this, Tracy tracked down Purdy Fallar (a murderer, gold thief, traitor, and beloved brother of Notta) on the moon. Purdy fled Tracy’s custody and attempted to commit suicide by running onto the moon surface when the temperature was -225 degrees. Purdy quickly froze and appeared to be dead, but he was revived to a zombie-like state by Dr. Klippoff. Notta was released from prison to care for Purdy full time. She doubts the official explanation of Purdy’s demise and blames Tracy for it.Notta has been fuming about the many wrongs she believes Tracy has committed against her and her loved ones, and that is why she is plotting revenge against him.
I was hoping the long-awaited Notta story would not be a revenge plot. I am not a big fan of revenge plots because, to me, they always wear a bit thin. To me, Tracy as the hero of the strip, seems much more noble when he is defending society from crime, greed, or corruption than only defending himself. If old villains are going to be brought back, I feel they should have a plot line worthy enough to warrant their return. Another revenge plot line seems too easy.
Notta’s story is off to an intriguing start. Jim in CT makes a good point. Notta’s assault of Blaze has nothing to do with the particulars of their personal relationship. Blaze seems to have forgiven her, although she is not on board with Notta’s plans for revenge. Having been abused by Piggy, no one will be ordering the “Little House Mother” back to the stables ever again. Ray’s point regarding the revenge angle is valid. For me, a major concern is that Notta not be a one-story character. To attempt and murder Tracy can never succeed, and the aftermath is bound to be prison or death. A classic character like Notta needs to stick around. She should be a recurring character, a thorn in Tracy’s side. Not every criminal in Tracyville takes a dead end route. Staton’s take on Notta is excellent. Looking forward to how things unfold. Having both Bribery and Notta knocking about in Tracyville makes for a multitude of possibilities.
Thanks to Willy007 (thanks for the great panels!), Neil Wick, Vista Bill, Gweedo (nice, thx), Night-Gaunt49, JerryH, fhofmann, capt mutt (well done!), yumpinyiminey, Ray Toler, Chris Sherlock, JPuzzleWhiz and Sydney Phillips for the kind words. Very much appreciated.
I wonder what role Bribery is going to have in all this. He’s had a number of plans to get rid of Tracy over the years but they’ve always failed miserably. One got Matty Square killed instead of Tracy. I’m not sure if he’d be willing to sign on to Notta’s plan unless he felt it could succeed. I don’t think the Apparatus will be involved since they are not connected and they have their own priorites.
Should we be looking forward to another bad guy demise ?
They might be reluctant to let Notta die, she’s been around so long. I can see her going to prison, though, but I don’t know what would happen to Purdy in that case. I think the demise of Purdy might be more likely.
As Putty Puss completes his “Dick Tracy” makeover, we get some explication from Notta, seeking her revenge and holding up the false flag of “freedom” for Blaze, who in truth will never be free of police pursuit until she gets right with herself and with The Law. Blaze is a secretive, taciturn, complex, but weak character. Maybe she needs someone new in her life, someone without an ulterior motive….
Gweedo came to the rescue with these immortal words,Was that a Vista Bill movie in the film canister that Sprocket clocked Stiletta with ?-——————————————————————————.Aha! Thanks for clearing the fog, Gweedo!
Putty Puss is (once again) misquoting a popular song, Beautiful Stranger by Madonna, originally composed for the 1999 movie Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. The nearest equivalent to what Putty Puss is singing is the line, “I fell in love with a beautiful stranger”. Anyways here’s the video:
