bernice: i'm truly impressed at how well you've handled your breakup with quill, luann. i thought you'd be-
luann: aaaugh
luann: like that?
bernice: yes. exactly like that.
Rollo, a few days ago there was a press release about a Swedish study that hits all of Luann’s interest categories: children, creativity, ceramics, and art history. It is a study of Bronze Age child ceramics artisans. I left the link near the end of yesterday’s comments for you last night, but I do not think you saw it.
Luann did not simply “get over” Quill. Somehow, she’s also copped a kind of mischievous and rebellious attitude about it. (That actually can be a way to deal with a little pain that’s still there.) I don’t think she consciously knows what she wants next in her life. But I think when it shows up – probably in her next romance – it will be something unconventional, and kind of anti-Quill. As if to say, see – I’m not the gal you always took me to be. But that can be a little dangerous. If she’s now defining her ego as “not Quill’s girlfriend” then it could kind of unbalance her in some contrary direction. I think something unconventional is just around the corner.
AAUGH-[cough-cough, gagging] Sorry, can’t do those like I used to! Back when we were kids, me, Tink, and the others was great at mimicking cartoon characters.
It’s “ARRRRRRGHH!!!” and Not “AAAUGH!”“ARRRRRRGHH” is what One Yells Before BATTLE.Screaming “AAAUGH” indicates that You Regret Your Decision and will Soon be “a-bawling” Your eyes out behind closed doors in Your Delightfully Cluttered room.
So Buck Up and have a Lifesaver (HECK, Keep the Roll) and get ON with Your Life.
Say, have You checked out Bernie’s Creepy Imaginary B/F, Piro, Yet? Might be a Good “Follow-Up Prospect.”
Besides, I wanna Hear Bernie scream “ARRRRRRGHH,” Before the “Hair Pulling” begins……,
Yes …just exchange a brick wall for a couch, and, violin! -And since you’re replacing the brick wall, Bern could easily fill in for Lucy and her Booth. Bern already puts her “two cents” in….
“Peanuts To You!”“S.O.S. (Shades O’ Schultz”)“A ‘Sparky’ Plug”“Lil’ Folks”Johnathan Livingston Bea-gle"“AUUGGGHH!mentation”“A Quick Quill Quell”“A Barbed Jab”“Getting ‘The Quills’ Out From Under Your Skin Don’t Hurt, After All!”“Writing Off A Quill”“No More Chains And Feathers”“Q…..Who?”“A ‘Casual’ Conversation”or“A Couched Response”
I keep hoping that Quill will deliberately run into her on campus again, and take her to lunch. Keep the attraction going. On the other hand, Greg could have decided to write Quill out of the script. If so, I am not interested in the college riff-raff.By the way, with whom is Quill staying? Guther’s Mom?
Wouldn’t it be funny if Luann’s joking-around scream caused us to learn that Gunther and Tiff had become an item; if they came running down the hall to make sure all was okay with her lipstick smeared and some of it on his face?
7I am glad that Luann is only ACTING so upset about Quill. It is IMO very good for her to be more on her own, thinking more about her self than just being “in the relationship”.I think this is bound to be a very interesting week if it is going to focus on Luann and Bernie chatting about things. I am looking forward to this!I had said this a few times before, that (like in a few other cases during the last month or so) Greg has used the “upturned, gaping open-mouthed” look that is so classically seen in Charles Schultz’s “Peanuts”. However, for me, IMO, while that look is classic and wonderful in “Peanuts”…. to me, it is a rather jarring departure from Greg’s more typical style. One of the things I find so artistically pleasing in terms of Greg’s drawing style is the clean lines and the simplicity of the lines that captures a very realistic look and portrayal of the characters. I really enjoy examining the drawings and their detail and their colorization (very positive nods to Sheriff for his part in that aspect).Unfortunately, to me, the “Schultz-ian” look Greg has adopted several times in the last month to show this upturned head style anguish is always quite jarring to me from the aesthetic point of view of Greg’s art. To me, it seems so very different from his typical artistic perspective, that I find it distracting. Greg has shown those sorts of upset/anguished emotions many other times in ways that IMO are more in keeping with his broader artistic style. I hope he considers going back in that direction more.
Contrary to a few views, I think that those who think this panel shows how juvenile Luann still is totally misses the point. I think those viewers are not able to see dramatically expressed change, nor perhaps do they want too, Clearly she is showing how emotionally she would have reacted before breaking up with Quill, which was traumatic, and how coolly she reacted to it now. She made her decision, acted on it, is cool with it, and is moving on. If that is not growing up I don’t know what is. Luann is not the grade school girl pinning after Aaron Hill, or the high school girl dying to be accepted by handsome or cute guys (insecure), and the first man she had a serious relationship with, for perfectly valid reasons, she initiated a breakup, so she is not the emotionally needed college girl either. It’s not to say that relationships might not be a problem going forward, that is the nature of life, but she is not as insecure, and has definitely grown up. This is dramatic exposition of that point. Moreover the thing about the big open mouth arrggghh? So many cartoonists imitate Peanuts with that. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Charles Schulz was the king, everyone knows that. He expressed all kinds of emotions with his characters, his art, and his Charlie Brown, Dramatic Exposition people. Enjoy it for chrissakes!!! (lol).
Luann and Quill were together for quite a long time, for a teen-age romance. And it was quite the romance – with a long-distance component, fending off wooing potential interlopers, time spent together etc. I don’t think it’s a sign of weakness or immaturity for Luanne to still be talking about the break-up, and her recent run-in with Quill, now.
maybe someone in the hallway will have heard that. They will knock and come in to see if things are OK and the plot will move from there…………..or maybe not.
-Just got home in time for CBS network news (usually miss it.) Last story was about a 6th grade class that had worked for 4 years to get a small photography satellite built and launched by NASA. Launch has finally occurred, but the kids have not yet received their first photo back.
The interviewer asked one young scientist how he felt about the delay. He said “I can answer in one word — ARRRRGGHHHH!”
So it’s not just Charlie Brown, anymore. It’s the next generation of scientists, too.
And Scott Pelley had the final word. He said “that must be a scientific term meaning ‘please call home’….”
Is it okay that I’m not happy about this breakup? I really liked them together. I’m happy Luann wants to discover herself, but….well, maybe it will be like For Better or For Worse, when Elizabeth finally got with her childhood love.
LOL! Yes, but he has too strong a mandible, too high a skull instead of it projecting backward (have to put a large brain somewhere…), no occipital bun, and his brow ridges are not pronounced. Neanderthals are now know to have had more of that type of coloring, though. Sapiens of the time were darker, though some had light eyes.
And no pronounced brow ridges and no occipital bun in older years. Neanderthal skulls projected more backward with more of the brain behind the face. Skull shapes vary a decent bit even currently, but they had some unique features. Heck, in modern populations there have been ones that modified the skull shapes in infancy w straps and boards. That is another matter, though.
She was just making a dramatic point here. Not losing it. Look at the last panel.I think Gerry Lee was just being tongue-in-cheek.Ah, but being too deceptively tongue-in-cheek runs the risk of appearing to be a bit thick.

I think we’re taking a breather from dead-end romances and unattractive characters and just enjoying the fresh air with some old pals.
