This was a good strip. Breathed was spot on about his takes especially the ones about Binkley looking like a carrot though Mickey Dolenz has said that the Monkees did take some musical instrument lessons as they found success via their TV show and Mike Nesmith (RIP) said he regarded himself as a musician first and an actor second so that take Binkley threw at Lola might be up for debate.
I always think about this strip whenever I’m reminded about Knight Rider. I have to agree with Milo. I was in my early teens when it stared and I thought it was brilliant. But I liked it less and less as I got older.
Another fun fact: after he was rejected because of bad hair and teeth, Stephen Stills suggested Peter Tork, who was an accomplished musician and could play several instruments.
1) While their records were, in fact, almost entirely the legendary LA session players known as the Wrecking Crew, Mike Nesmith was an accomplished guitarist & singer/songwriter both before and after his time in the Pre-Fab Four.
2) It would have our defense purposes better if they had given “Star Wars” to the USSR; the best result they ever got testing it was a 30% success rate – and that was with them cheating & putting homing signals in the targets.
The Monkees did not ALL originally play their instruments but that changed as the series progressed and ultimately became the reason for the tv show cancellation, as the actors wanted more control.

And not a particularly appetizing-looking carrot either, Binkley.

The Monkees did play their own instruments on tour, and in most of the albums after their second one.

One of my all time favorite Bloom County Sunday strips. Opus DOES look more like a puffin.

And yet, Lola just keeps making those baggy overalls looking hot. XD

Does anyone think that Springsteen’s roadies would have really wanted Nancy?

My question is, what were the truths that Berke rejected when he wrote the strip?

I never watched Knight Rider much, but I liked the idea of the talking car character. Loved the theme music too.

No Opus, not the carrot metaphor! Don’t go there. Binkley is too fragile.

The truth was that Binkley fervently hoped that with her shocked shrug, both Lola’s overall straps would fall.

The big question is why did Opus’s (nose?) (beak?) grow so much? No one ever wants to delve into that!
