What did Nancy’s father-in-law even teach her husband?

On the other hand, Frank, the weeds may be the only green thing growing in the lawn this year due to the drought in California. So maybe just leave them alone…

Aw, DON’T Sweat it, Frank. I’m SURE there are PLENTY of ‘Lawn Care Specialists’ in town that would be DE-LITED to take care of Your Lawn for You.

    And They’d only CHARGE You 75 to 100 Bucks a Week, and….,

HEY NANCY! Frank’s Grabbed the Lawnmower! LOOK at Him GO!!

If you mow at highest setting it shades out weed seeds and they don’t sprout.

Not to nit pick but was the chain saw even invented during the 1940’s?

    @ edgetoedge:

Actually, the chainsaw was invented around 1830 and used as a medical device.

The gas powered chainsaw appeared in the 1920’s, but the first ones were large, two-person machines.

The one you see in the cartoon is a bit anachronistic, as the lighter one person models didn’t appear until the late 40s.

    Here’s a link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chainsaw#History

And, of course, all this proves is that I have waaaay too much time on my hands.

BTW, free info is available at the gov’t Cooperative Extensions to know the best grass types, mower settings, plantings, and so on, since that can vary some with location. Not all weeds are native, though some certainly are. There are quite a few types of invasive plants brought in by people.Lawn care products, especially but not only fertilizers, are shifting a number of ecosystems and unbeknowst to those using them are actually causing a good amount of damage. Especially vulnerable to such products are ecosystems that need slightly acidic soils, and useful predatory insects such as firefly larvae.

75% of the time the engineers used bulldozers, glorified earth movers, and lots & lots of det cord.

An old buddy of mine was an engineer. His company could put up tens of miles of razor wire a day.

BTW, if we wanted to seal the border with Mexico it would only take a brigade or two of engineers a month to put down a pile of 10 coils high of razor wire. No human could get through that. If anchored correctly it would stop trucks (and give the driver a very gruesome death).

This strip started in 1985, and Frank would have been at least 30 years old to have a preteen daughter. So Frank was probably born around 1955. His dad could have been born in 1925 or earlier. Thirty years per generation was very common at that time.

General Luann comment:One thing that happens pretty often in Luann, sometimes w success for the characters, is that they “flip the script”. Today i ran into an article and then a podcast on how at times that approach has huge success.http://www.npr.org/programs/invisibilia/485603559/flip-the-scriptThe article which led me there was one on a successful picnic day organized in Kansas by and for both police and Black Lives Matter. It was mentioned as an example of flipping the script in a creative way and the link to the podcast was given. Some readers here assume doom for every time that is tried in Luann, but in Luann and in the real world flipping the script can at times work beautifully. Sometimes it is not possible to know until something is tried if salvation is in a certain type of creativity.

Frank’s dad was NOT in the Army Corps of Engineers if he was making a path for advancing troops. He was a “Combat Engineer”. Actually there is a huge difference.

Saw a picture of Luann’s grandparents several years ago, they looked to be pushing 90. So, it would seem that Grandpa must have been in WW2. Frank looks to be in his early 50’s and his child-bride, Nancy in her mid 40’s.

To me it’s obvious, Frank’s dad was a “mature” born in the 30’s or very late 20’s who fought in WWII in the Asian theater. Frank is probably early or mid-fifties; remember Brad is older and he has to be near late 20’s coming up on 30’s. Frank’s dad could have fought in Korea, but that is not likely. Korea, for the most part, has a climate much like the Northern US, and it can get COLD there. So Frank’s dad was in WWII cutting through the jungles in all those islands, including possibly the Phillipines, or even in Southeast Asia, although that was more the French and Brits.

Oh and Nancy is a babe anyway, so late 40’s for her.

His dad was a lot younger at that time, too. Plus he was imbued with ‘doing his bit’ for he war effort. Different than sitting home in suburbia.

…and then there are the “drought tolerant, native species, xeriscape” landscaping. Some just call it cultivated weeds, but if done right, can still be aesthetically pleasing. Ah Southwest life! I may miss my (green) lawn, but I like the trade-offs.

I realize that we have some older posters here (80+) but I guess you are forgetting that WW2 ended 71 years ago. If Frank’s dad was 20 in 1944, he would be 92 years old today. If Frank was born in 1949, he would be 67; not very likely. Brad is 20-21. If we assume that Frank was 25 when Brad was born he would be 46 today. If Frank was born in 1970. Then his dad would have been in Vietnam. Whew!
