Couples who look like they deliver pizzas for a living purchase houses that costs more than I netted in my entire working life and keep screeching “Oh, my god!” when they see the renovations that cost even more. Another program genre to avoid watching.
We have a similar show here in the UK called “Escape to the Country”. People want land, all modern conveniences, sometimes swimming pools, seclusion ….. oh, and the house has to be with 20 minutes drive of a mainline station to commute to London!
I feel the same way when I watch. They are so darn persnickerty over small things. Popcorn ceilings? Who comes in and stares at your ceilings? Wrong color counter tops? Are you kiddingly me. Laminate hardwood on floors? My laminate hardwood looks just as great as my daughters “real” wood, for a third of the cost. And turning up their noses at a house becase it doesn’t have “character”? What does that even mean.
Ah ! Our Materialistic, I have to have the Best of Everything so I can Impress Everyone with My Wealth and Possessions, Society ! Just let me have the basics and a simple, relaxing, No Bills Life ! I’m very happy with our old school two bedroom wood frame house, simple and cheap to maintain and who needs more ? Live your Life’s don’t waste them chasing unimportant materialistic things. You-all Have a Great Day !
The building I live in has 9 floors and faces west on the Gulf of Mexico. We watch beautiful sunsets most every evening and are one mile from the main highway, stores, etc. An apt. on the 6th floor which faces the sea, has a balcony AND a very large side patio took a long time to sell because the living room had been painted orange. Paint? Is that really a problem? It’s so easy and relatively inexpensive to change. I don’t get it.
The funniest ones are when the house is already beautiful, they’re talking about being on such a tight budget and “OMG, we’ll have to remodel everything!”
Don’t forget the 17X50 foot walk in closet. that’s too small and no room for her shoes . My closet is 6X7 and all our clothes and shoes plus other stuff fit in it. Our bathroom is the same size. Hay we don’t live in them just use them.
We’ve watched House Hunters International where people from North America want to move overseas and live in the local culture. They always want houses that have the comforts of those back home. That’s not taking in the local culture. Don’t move. Stay in North America.
Coming from a Realty business, I’ve found that most of those objections are just trivial excuses and complaints of ‘BUYERS’ that are looking for THEIR PERFECT HOUSE that meets their every conceivable want without any effort. Hint: They don’t exist without your “touch” with a little personality.
Would love to see them move into base housing. I used the washer and dryer to mix batter and put cookies on the baking trays. Had cinder block outter walls, and a carport for 1 car. It was take it or look for a place off base…
I remember one House Hunters from several years ago where the lady looking to buy a house had a budget of $65K and bought a house for $50K that needed work, not the kind everyone talks about, but actual repairs to the outside of the house, and things like a new furnace and a new roof. Think it was a small 1 br, 1 bath house with a small separate garageBelieve it was someplace in Michigan.Difference between “reality shows” and Dramas is that while Dramas are scripted, “reality shows” have an overall script, but are allowed to say whatever they will. They were invented during a TV writers strike to provide new programming, without writers. Any program that is scripted must use TV writers, and pay their salaries
I cringe when I see the prices of the homes today considering in the “old days” you could get a lovely 4 bedroom house for 21k…..I am old now and rent….this way if the neighborhood changes I leave….with a house you are stuck and in CA lots of neighborhoods that use to be safe aren’t any longer and from what I read neither are many areas in the country.
We ended up removing all the awful wallpaper, including in the eating area of the kitchen. That was brown with big orange and yellow flowers, the blinds were orange as was the ceiling strips that hold the fluorescent bulbs. Now everything’s been a lovely off-white for over 19 years.
I remember selling a house once where the realtor insisted we had to paint all the walls beige. Near the finish of that task I amused the Mrs. by saying that we HAD to sell it now as I couldn’t stand living there much longer, looking at beige walls.

True. However, like all the other “reality shows”, it is scripted. I wonder if they memorize their lines or read them from a teleprompter.

“Meet Jan and Don, newly married with no children and looking for their starter home. He’s a consultant, she is a lab tech.
“There must haves: 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, a minimum of 3500 sq/ft and it must fit their budget of no more than $750,000. "
yup, that’s reality for sure!

Cracked foundation and leaning walls? I wouldn’t think it even SAFE to live in something like that! They’d never get a mortgage on it.

When you describe my house in your strip, you should pay for the rehab, as they did for Downton Abbey.
