Oooooh… harsh. (Now how are even immigrants {Yes, I know Baldo’s family are legal citizens} supposed to get their better opportunity in life in a new land if they keep getting that negativity?)
And it is not just jobs. It is that they also “take our slots in the schools”! Went thought that garbage with my kids when I got out of the Military because one was born overseas at my last assignment and my wife was a Green Card holder. So both my kids were seen by many as “Not American” when it was blatantly not true.
Because, of course, he can tell the difference between a documented or undocumented immigrant and a native-born or naturalized citizen of Mexican descent. (Sarcasm font required here)
One of the reasons I DO read it it because Baldo takes chances in showing what life is like for a Latino/Hispanic family. And that includes the bigotry they encounter.
To: LYNNWOOLLEY and others who don’t understand this strip…
Hector Cantú and Carlos Castellanos created this strip to be a bilingual ( it is also written in Spanish and enjoys worldwide popularity ) comic that educates socially, through humor, young Latinos, using Baldo, his family and friends as models for the Hispanic diaspora.
They have never wavered from their goal to teach social lesson. Today’s strip is obviously a set up for the weekly arc, which I assume will deal with ignorance, prejudice, and racial bigotry in a non preachy way.
If it offends you, then don’t read it. It is a free country afterall. But if its message annoys you, I suggest you look within yourself for the reasons. Perhaps you see something of yourself in the customer ?
To the person who started out with the “illegal immigrant rant” Sorry sir, you are clueless – do NOT buy any fruits or vegetables as they are harvested by extremely hard working families. Go away.
Oh, dear. It’s hard to know what to say, but I will tell you that I don’t need any more hate, of any kind, coming at me through this screen. I find the kind of attitude portrayed in this cartoon as appalling as the next decent soul, but that’s the problem. Hate, simply portrayed, doesn’t help us learn to do better. Neither does spewing venom in the comments. I live in the Salinas Valley, in California. I also teach the children whose parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles work in the fields. It is amazingly hard work. A job is a job. It is has no nationality, or ethnic identity. My own daughter worked in the fields after she graduated from college. It was a job. And she isn’t Hispanic. She’s as Anglo as you can get. So am I. And, while I understand such ignorance abounds, I am concerned by the portrayal of Anglo-Americans as this hateful. Most people I know are not like this cartoon character of a man. The sad thing about racism, of any kind, is that it is usually institutionalized, and silent.
So what is he supposed to do? Take your income taxes instead by going on welfare? I hate that man’s attitude. I would just blow up at him if I was there.
Hey! This is NOT an op-ed page comic strip, so leave ALL politics out of it. There are plenty of places to read opinion (even if we agree with it), but comics should be FUNNY STUFF. Keep this up and you lose me as a customer—and more and more until you’re cartooning for the fun of it—and if that happens, it will be no big deal!

He didn’t “take” a job – somebody HIRED him. And he was hired because an employer believed he would be the best employee.
If you can’t compete, it’s your own fault. Not the person who got the job.
