Frankly, Luann is not acting like herself or talking like herself, especially in panel 3. Fay is so timid she needs theater camp to boost her confidence. Hopefully Luann will return to herself stat! I dislike this Luann.
Bunch of early naysayers again. This young girl Fay is a young, lonely, possibly bullied child (she is not cool in her mind because of her food allergies) and she is probably of non-European descent, possibly Hispanic, or Middle Eastern, or Indian or Pacific Islander. It’s hard to see that in the print version in the paper, but here we clearly can see it in the colorized GoComics frames. She is of color to be blunt. Luann is being a very encouraging, wonderful friend, at least initially, for this girl. The theater may be something that compensates her very well, in a lot of ways. She may have talent. One thing I am sure of, is that we definitely will not see the last of Fay. She is a very interesting young girl. I think she is really looking at Luann as a friend, possibly a mentor. Pru can be one as well. Sometimes one can have one set of plans, but life has other plans. I think this is a case of other plans.
There’s no theater camp with just one guest. However Luann & Pru may try to create some theater activities for Fay to experience. A good start is to coach Fay in pretending to be somebody else for a few minutes, the basis of acting. Faye might learn to develop alternate personas and engage people with them.
It looks like Fay’s health issues tend to alienate her from her peers. She feels inferior and anticipates failure. Maybe Luann & Pru can start with having Fay interact with Shannon – learning what works and what doesn’t work in taking control of the games. It’s no good to just let Shannon boss everybody around for half an hour – you have develop some mind control. Maybe to start – Luann, Pru, Fay and Shannon go to the park and clown around with the swings and other stuff – making up funny personnas. Then when it’s time for Shannon’s nap – talk to Fay about what kind of character she’d like to play. In the theater world, I remember some really nice people that enjoyed playing bad guys – they had a lot of fun.
Theater buds are the best! Let me tell you about this guy I know into theater. His name is Quill, and….OK. Let me try again. I was in a show in high school and there was a girl in the show named Tiffany and….OK. Let me try again. I have a friend named Gunther and he did costumes for me and he is the nicest guy I know. Except he took a trip to South America after high school and came back as mean as a snake and…OK. Let me try again. I know Prudence and she is super nice to my family and my parents compare her to me and it makes me look really bad with my parents and…OK. Maybe theater buds are not the best. I think I am going to get another hot dog.
When she was in high school, did Luann participate in sports or band or clubs, herself? Not that I recall. Does she do any of those things now, in junior college? Apparently not. Has Luann in fact made any friends there, other than Jack and Nil? None that we’ve ever seen. This conversation therefore seems… strange.
Ahhhhh, “FRIENDSHIP!” It should ALWAYS be Cherished!!
And Luann? Fay will be a much BETTER “Friend” to YOU than Paranoid, Mean-Spirited, Self-Centered, Selfish, Possessive, Hateful, Psychotic, Soul-Destroying, Frumpy, Stud-Stalking, “Bernice.”
This strip has taken a major downhill turn. It has ceased to be funny and fun loving and turned into a bad soap opera. “Oh look at Luann she is helping a poor kid that is allergic to foods” Not near as good as it used to be. And some of you commenter’s need to get a life rather than live vicariously through a comic. I cannot believe that people are argueing about what race one of the characters is.
Sorry to relay some sad news, and most may already know, but June Foray, who voiced ‘Rocky’ The Flying Squirrel, ‘Granny’ from Looney Tunes and so many more has passed away at 99 yesterday. On September 18, she would have made it to 100. A little off-subject – I know – but she was a true champion in the animation world.
It would be best if Fay is 16 or 17. She could hang with the gang sometimes. Fay & Bernice could get snarky together. Tiffany could experiment with different hair and makeup on Fay – with the idea of trying out a different personality with each look.
This strip is better when it concentrates on characters about the age of Fay than on those who are younger (Shannon) or older (Luann). Junior high and high school are its comfort zone.
Fay is hooked! In her eyes, Luann is her theatre bud, her new and maybe only friend. The look on her face in panel 3 says it all (a very accomplished piece of cartooning!)….

You’re right. Ms. Foray was indeed a very, very talented woman. It will take many to try and replace the talent of that one. RIP June Foray.
