The single-minded dedication needed of an entire society in order to accomplish such a migration — even if it were physically possible — is no less than what would be required to enforce sustainable stewardship of the Earth itself.
“We live in the Garden of Eden now, I don’t know why we want to bring the whole thing to the ground” John Dawson, New Riders of the Purple Sage….I say we just fix and repair this place….
Nature isn’t “kind” to any species. Species take care of themselves. The mistake, however, is that humans are incapable of taking the long view, so they think only in terms of what strategy would allow them as a species to keep breeding and populating, finding ways to slow environmental change and damage. But in the long view, the only correct evolutionary view, even failure is part of evolution. Human activity may indeed wreck the environment (assuming the unlikely event that external forces don’t crash the Earth first), but that failure induces a chance to adapt, including behavioral adaptation. In other words, humans can’t think their way into having it all, a clean planet full of people. Evolution,if the place isn’t sterilized by a meteor first, will do its work for us, and, as a highly adaptable species, we will adapt, as proper, on an evolutionary time scale. And it just may be that the natural course of the human species is a cycle of crash and rebuild, over and over for millions of years. But that process will surely pale in the face of events that are inevitable over that period of time. We are just another puny species, along for the ride. Enjoy the ride.
I knew it, that old tired argument about how we have to do one thing OR another. As some lame argument against space travel, people trot out “But what about (whatever)!” We can do both, you know. You know what, we could be working on (whatever) right now instead of reading cartoons?
This had been one of my favorite strips, but no more. Maybe I won’t be missed as I never commented much. Here, outside of the net, I will now work to get this strip removed frm the Anderson paper and any other who carry this drivel.
Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. He’s thinking as an individual, when he ought to be thinking as a species. Isn’t it worth seeding other planets so that in case of catastrophe some would survive and carry forward our biological and philosophical heritage?

We can do both if we are patient.

You need to reconsider, Arlo. Nature is indifferent. After all, humans have been around for hundreds of thousands of years.

I think the last time I saw or heard the “had rather” construction was when was growing up in East Texas. Is it a southern thing?

Politics is bad enough. Politics in comics is just rude.

This argument presupposes that the generation that would undertake starting over on a new planet was also in the position to save this one.

The USA has made huge strides in cleaning up the environment since the 50’s. Unfortunately we don’t control the Chinese, Indians, Mexicans, etc…

It’s really a simple equation: Wrecking the planet makes money, saving the planet costs money. Therefore, we wreck the planet!

Screw you Earthers. When things go south on Earth, we of the Free Mars Federation will not allow forced unsustainable mass immigration of Earthers.
