Chickens can be driven into a frenzy by a spot of red against a non-red background (for instance, a spot of blood appearing on the opponent of a fighting rooster). So when the traffic light is red, the chickenâs natural urge is to rush headlong into the intersection and attack whatever it sees.
By putting up signs which explicitly state when itâs safe to cross and when it isnât, the hope is that the rational centers of the chickenâs brain will override its instinctual responses, and reduce road fatalitiesâŠ

It is obvious that the question is not âwhy did the chicken cross the roadâ, But âwhen did it cross?.
