Yeah, that’s reaching just a bit, Stephan, since the verse is actually “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Prov. 16:18
Hey, Toon Boy – did you know there actually was a ventriloqiual act from the late 50’s onwards in the UK featuring a character named “Lenny the Lion”? I watched it as a kid.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRslhdudAsU for one link to it.
(Given Stephan’s original profession, he can think about Lenny and his buddy, Copyright… )
The short version is recognized as a common idiom. One of the four on-line dictionaries I checked didn’t bother to reference the original, two others just said it was adapted from Proverbs.
Final, I promise, and I know some are happy to hear that, comment on this from me. I think it’s ironic that there’s some annoyance here about the like/dislike attitude about puns… and about attention to original sources… and about whether something has the faintest whiff of connection to, HORRORS!, the Bible. Because the Bible is loaded with “pun like” plays on the sounds of various words. Positively loaded. One Hebrew Bible, aka “Old Testament” example… the name “Adam.” One New Testament occurrence, Jesus’s reference to Herod as a “fox.” No, I’m not going to go into a detailed explication of those. If you care, look them up yourself.

What KAPUTNIK said describes me to a “T.” That may make me one of the great unwashed, but I’ll live with it. I liked the joke and the strip.

The comic was funny, punny, and very cute! Lenny wasn’t necessarily ‘quoting’ the bible – that’s just how some took it.
