I thought men had gotten a bit more secure in themselves these days so that they felt they could attract women in their own age groups. Where’s the thrill in captivating very young girls???? Do real men have to compete with young teenage boys to attract young females? There are ‘real’ older women out there, to be sure. Maybe they are too smart to fall for those types of fellows.
Connie is probably referring to her own, older step-daughter, Gayle. But, I believe what Connie is trying to say, is there comes a day in most women’s lives when they realize they aren’t as young as they think they are. For me, it was when store clerks started calling me ’ma’am’ instead of ‘miss.’
A friend at work said he was driving his daughter through the local college campus when the daughter observed, “Dad, I see how you are looking at the coeds and I see how they are looking at you. And, Dad, it isn’t the same.”
Lynn has made jokes about the “Construction Workers Whistling” before- in a comic, Elly actually gets mad when they barely react to her (“I think I’m worth more than THAT!”. In the Collected Edition with her comments beneath, she actually says “They don’t do this any longer. It’s too bad! I appreciated a good whistle!”
So, uh, you’re not gonna find her MeTooing that much in the ’80s strips.
My mother learned to use a computer at age 80 ! She was thrilled at the speed and convenience of using a computer vrs. a typewriter.
She passed in 2001. I often wonder ( since she was addicted to the telephone ) how much she’d have been thrilled with today’s hand held electronic devices.
BTW She retired at age 83 as a school secretary and kept her own home til she died at age 89.
My friend Deborah and I walked past a bunch of construction workers who were sitting on a sidewalk having their lunch. We were in New York—it was a narrow space and they had to move their legs to let us by. As we passed, they continued their conversation and politely ignored us. When we reached the next block, Deb turned to me, smiled and said, “Remember when?”
My girlfriend ofternwalked home from a friend’s house after dark in Tokyo. On the way she passed a construction site where she was often subjected to comments from the workers. Then one time she was physically accosted on the street by a mugger and immediately found herself surrounded by the construction workers who decked the mugger and called the police. One of the workers accompanied her home safely.
Heck, they whistled at me when I was about 11 years old walking home from the library. And that was nearly 70 years ago. I also remember being whistled at when I was 9 and walking with my Dad.

Harkens back to an earlier time in urban construction. Anybody does that now might end up looking at her across a judge’s bench.

Neither of them is much over 35!
They’re way too young to give up on learning about computers….
or to consider themselves middle-aged ladies…. at that age.
Old? Just wait, ladies. Just wait.

I was a late bloomer, so when a really cute guy said, “Hi, there!” I looked over my shoulder to see who he was talking to.

Elizabeth is Elly’s daughter and she is probably 8 or 9? If a construction worker whistled at her that would be creepy, not funny.

The workers are competing with themselves not the younger men!
