I donât start playing Christmas music until the tree is up (just bought it, but itâs in the garage, soaking in some water). It helps put off the inevitable. Saves my sanity. ;P
After hearing some of the recent versions of old favorites, including hymns, I can understand their need to run in sub-freezing weather.
Although, to be fair, I heard a âreasonablyâ well done remake of Eartha Kittâs Santa Baby. Singer tried for it but only Eartha could do that song and make it work.
I donât stream, I just listen to Christmas music on YouTube and select my own songs. Iâve heard some Trans Siberian Orchestra and quite a few of Da Yooperâs âRusty Cheveroletâ.
I wonder what itâs like to work in a department store in December. Must be kinda like the Disney World employees in the Small World section. They probably have to rotate them out into rehab every 3-4 hours.
Dude, this time of year my playlist is lots of Bossa Nova and Be Bop and jazz arrangements of Xmas songs. And Elvisâs Xmas Album. And NO Little Drummer Boy. Goddess, I hate that song.
For a while, there, I wasnât so sure about the idea of algorithms choosing my music preferences for me, but then I remembered I am obnoxious and donât take suggestions all that well. After all, I was listening to Jean-Luc Ponty, Ry Cooder and Little Feat when radio-station program directors were trying their level best to sell me on Led Zeppelin. And that was when I was young and supposedly impressionable. Granted, I was also listening to a bunch of the other stuff they were pushing, some of it prescient, some of it embarrassing*. Maybe the down-low here is that I just donât care for Led Zeppelin.
And so it is with Spotify or Pandora or Amazon or Apple (they should merge and become âAmpleâ) or whoeverâs mainframes believe they can do my thinking for me. Some of the stuff theyâve thrown at me Iâve really liked and may not have discovered otherwise. Plenty of stuff theyâve thrown my way, Iâve ducked like the high hard one. Most of it probably passed by unremembered like so much white noise.
All in all, Iâm just happy anybody is trying to sell me on any music. I can always ignore something I donât like, but itâs hard to dig what you never got a chance to hear.
I just used the word âdigâ in that context. So now you know I liked Donovan, too.
*and some of it just plain confusing; like, I donât think anybody actually liked anything on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack but they didnât want to seem like they were missing the Next Big Thing, with the salient exception that EVERYBODY likes âStayinâ Aliveâ to this day, whether they admit that or not.Frazz by Jef Mallett for Dec 16, 2017 | GoComics.com
