Everything is a race with kids. Every walk is a run to the end. Every meal is a rush to finish the food as quickly as possible.

In regards to what Shannon is wearing:

It almost looks like Greg is getting a kickback from Chevrolet.

People keep getting upset that I continue pointing out how immature and childish Luann is, yet here she is passing the time with a coloring book of all things. Other than the ones with small children, I don’t know any adults who even own crayons. I mean c’mon, this can’t be an accident here. Nobody else is noticing this character steadily backsliding into childhood right before our eyes? She wasn’t even this bad in high school. But hey Luann, you do you. Maybe if you ask nicely your Mommy will bring you a juice box and you can watch some cartoons before bedtime.

Maybe an informal poll will clear things up though: fellow readers, how many of you have ever sat actually sat down with one of these “adult coloring books” to pass the time? Anyone?

Well I see the New DeGroots have “pawned” Their “little problem” off on Luann, for a change.

Looks like Brad got those extra 30 minutes BACK from Luann after all….,

Adult coloring books are such ripoffs. Especially the ones in “college safe spaces”. They’re just coloring books – what’s the big whoop?

If I sound bitter, it’s because some people don’t like coloring. Just, y’know, some people.

Interesting to note that many great artists (like Picasso) worked very fast. However it remains to be seen if Shannon has talent.

Oh yes, Shannon is getting older now. And like one parent would say to another about their little girl growing up,“she’ll be kissing boys soon”.

I agree with Josh above. Shannon is clearly getting bigger in Luannverse. I would put her at 8 or 9, possibly 10? And to respond to the argument that adult coloring is immature, hey let me ask, what about full-grown adults bungee jumping? Or jumping in ice-cold lakes and rivers, or the ocean to raise money? How about pie, or hot dog contests. Oh wait, playing kids games, like hmmm, maybe basketball, baseball, horseshoes, badminton? How about sitting on a prayer rug intoning OMMM, OMMMM? That is, respectfully, a silly argument. Also keep in mind that Luann works with small children as a job (for those commentators who claim she does not work, while going to school, the “tsk, tsk” crowd. Find something better to critique. Luann#1 fan out, for now.

Maybe Luann should’ve warmed her up to it, by popping in the DVD that would introduce her to taking her time, with “Happy Little Clouds”….and “Cadmium Yellow”, and “Pthalo Green”…and that little “pocket squirrel”. Then, she would’ve learned that “there’s no mistakes in painting- just happy little accidents”.

    -

If she would’ve balked at all that? Then just skip to the bonus content- to see Bob Ross’ high flying action outakes from his chronicles as a top secret agent taking the patient missions nobody else could handle (as “the Fro Guy”)…partnering with a part time sous, full time strategy cooker who goes by “The French Chef" (covering as “Julia Child”, on incognito time)…along with “the Fixer” (who went by “Bob Callahan” in his civvies, replaced by Bob Villa), and their intel contact, who also doubled as a safe house ‘hider and stower’, codename: “Stache” (Gene Shallit). Occasional cameos by special assignments coordinator, “the Matcher” (who, in cover, went by “Chuck Barris”)…who went on to head “Operation: Gong, With The Win”.

Really, though, when I think about it, “coloring for adults” yields the same rewards as woodworking, whittling, golfing, needlepoint, pottery, painting, bonsai, Lego crafts, calligraphy, even writing and word craft…things that hone our patience and brings satisfaction, in “seeing the fruition of success in our selected steps, and the general outcomes of our personal choices” (and reminds me, personally, of the wonders all around, in God’s creation).

    -

As a bonus, “coloring for adults”, though seeming to be “simple” and “elementary”, by some accounts, still takes less ‘equipment’ and therefore less cost and maintenance than some of those other (great) activities, which also seems to be part of the appeal. Sometimes, at the library, they offer events like this for everyone, and people do seem to take to it!

Luann has an immature side, but this is not an example of that – she is acting like an adult all through this interaction. The ACTIVITY does not define one’s maturity. Spending quiet time mastering a new worldview, sharing something with a friend, avoiding getting into a juvenile race that would void the original reason for the experience…?

I find it interesting that “adult” coloring books seem to have taken the place of the Paint-by-Numbers sets from the 50’s and 60’s. I’ve done both and both are fun and oddly very calming.

usually those adult coloring books are supposed to be done with color pencils or markers, but who am I to tell a young woman how to relax? Though I never liked crayons as a kid, way too blunt and they never lay down an even color.

Shannon’s speed reminds me of how my younger son used to hit home runs at putt-putt golf.

Not standard rules, but he had fun. — hitting and seeking.

This topic sure generated a crap-ton of comments. Here is one more: When volunteering for Books To Prisoners, I learned that art books, how-to-draw books and, yes, coloring books are VERY frequently requested items. Those of you with unused coloring books, “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain,” and any other how-to books for illustrators who don’t need them, feel free to donate them to Seattle BTP, DC Books To Prisons Projects, or any of several other similar regional organizations.

There are more incarcerated people in this country than anywhere else in the word, and more people on 23 hour lockdown than you’d want to believe.

@Ringo I have several Adult Coloring Books. I enjoy stopping for a moment and not thinking about anything and getting lost in the pages. What does it matter to you? If you feel Luann is immature than don’t read the comic anymore. She is playful and still learning who she is as an adult!

Colored pencils work better for me. And yes, I’m in my 40’s and still color. I discovered coloring while in college (courtesy of being a summer camp counselor) reduced the stress of classes and applying for grad school. Back then, I had crayons and children’s coloring books. . .and no shame about it. I’d forgotten about it for about 20 years, and when it became in fashion, I was thrilled to get my hands on some adult coloring books. It really is quite relaxing.

Wow. Must you take a steaming dump on something relaxing and joyful to others? I’m 33 and (using colored pencils and pens) color complex coloring books. So does my Mom. So does my Grandma. So does my husband. So do professors I had. It’s calming and yes, can even be fun. Open your mind.
