OK – so I have to admit that Luann’s indecision today reminds me of myself at that age – and for some time after that, to be honest. Quick question: Which Luann character most reminds you of yourself?

Hey take a chance Lu!! I mean if you get a chance to go to Europe in Luannverse adventures, don’t go to Florence—you might accidentally run into the Statute of David!! OMG how about modern art museums all over the West, and Asia even!! I mean here in Chicago you might have to skip our Art Institute too. The human body is art, it is such a creation of nature, God, however you look at it. Of course we wear clothes, but art is truth, and all that stuff, huh? I sure hope that is where this is leading. Luann is not a little kid anymore people.

Apparently the community college where Luann goes is one where you can just decide to go to Figure Drawing class without little nuances like class registration, paying for the class, or even realizing that the spring semester is almost over. As for us readers, we have to wonder about the subtext of Luann’s sudden desire to see Tara in the nude. Given the free spirit Tara is, she would probably undress if Luann asked her to or gave her nickel or something. Why does Luann need to legitimize that desire with an art class?

Oh, Luann. Live up. You’ve been in a rut your whole life. Just go and draw a nudie or even better, pose nude. Channel Tara.

I was never an art student, so I guess I don’t get why this is such a big issue. I realize art is one of the most important things a country has (and I include writing, which I struggle to do), but not all artists have to paint or sculpt human figures. Most of the art I buy at art festivals is landscapes…

Pose nude holding your smartphone. Just get the camera in the right direction.

I still think Luann would not have had a problem drawing nudes if it’s somebody she doesn’t know. But now that Tara posed, Luann’s feelings are complicated. At this point, Tara appears to be Lu’s BF.

@KENHENSE: We can see how conflicted Luann is about all this by the way she’s dressed. She is all buttoned up. So I don’t think it’s about whether she knows the model or not. It’s the subject, and like I said above, not being a visual artist, I guess I don’t get why this is so critical…

I had an art teacher who said that nude figure drawing was great because it was so awkward that it made her focus entirely on the accuracy of what she was drawing rather than what it was she was drawing.

If she’s that nervous about it, maybe she should do what Nil does and choose an innocuous body part to focus on.

Good lord, this girl’s got hangups. First there was the completely disproportional freakout she had yesterday (as a former Evangelical I knew a lot of chaste and prudish teenage girls, and none of them ever got flat-out angry at the idea that a male acquaintance was hoping to see them naked.) And now she’s acting like this over simply seeing another person naked in a purely professional and artistic manner? She reminds me of the time Attorney General John Ashcroft insisted that the Spirit Of Justice statue be covered up because it had a bare breast.

It really is past time for Luann to emotionally mature, at least to somewhere close to her physical age. She can’t be an overgrown 14-year-old forever. There’s so much storytelling potential here that gets wasted because the writers want to keep her stagnant, presumably for the sake of the same old repetitive “HAHA, Luann is lazy/dumb/klutzy/sloppy” gags. Brad got to evolve over the years; why can’t she?

Draw nudes or pose nude, Luann. Either is fine by me. ;D

You can’t just walk into a college class. You have to enroll at the beginning of the semester and pay for it. And it’s April – she would have had to sign up for it months ago. And Luann’s what, 18 or 19? Why does she still act like a shy, blushing preteen? She and Quill got it on in a janitor’s closet. Since when is she mortified at the thought of seeing other people naked?

It’s unbelievable that there are people (like Luann) this freaked out over the thought of nudity.

Wouldn’t it be funny if the model was someone Luann knew, like Quill?

At a summer art class in NYC between HS and College, the model walked into the room and dropped his robe. My chin hit the floor as did most of the students. The teacher, knew it was a big deal for our first time. I had not seen full on adult nudity even though I had had several boyfriends in HS.

Figure drawing was a required course in art school. The models were the very distant cousins of fashion models. The only similarity being they could be still for a period of time.

$50.00. A flat fee. Okay, but Tiffany should get more if they pay on the curve.

I took as much figure drawing as I possibly could in college. I took the class 3-4 times, but i was also an illustration major.

Pitt Community College’s slogan: See a course you like? Just walk in and start taking it! Any time of the semester! It’s not as if you need to know anything that was taught in the course up until that point, because no one ever really learns anything here anyway!

As I said previously, it’s pitiful ( and somewhat insulting) that some readers would assume that Greg will not address the obvious issue of entering a class after it has started.

I used to read these online so I can see what others are thinking, but I have decided that I don’t want to any more. I’ll just say that it’s not what I enjoy reading. I can just follow this strip ( no pun intended) in the newspaper.

Folks. T&K are just jerking our chain. We’ll never see a nude model posing in the Luann strip. The only depiction of an art class model posing in the nude that I recall was in an Al Capp autobiographical comic book distributed to wounded returning vets from WWII.

If you’re looking for something to think about (and discuss?)… Who do you think Zemo would like to recruit as a model? From the Luann strip? Another cartoon/comic strip character? From real life? Stay ’tooned. My answers later today. :o)

Confusing panels for me today. Luann is now going to be in the art class. However, apparently the art class has been on-going for at least some time as the “nude elbow” by Nil was done in the previous class. So, I am not sure what is the backstory in this for Luann:

1) Has she been enrolled in the class and has been skipping one or several of the classes?

2) Was it early enough in the term/semester that she could still add and has now added the class late into her schedule?

3) Is she just going to visit and sit-in on the class that is not a class she has registered for because she wants to see nudes?

Each of the above has some challenges associated with it, but each is a possibility. In 1) we have not seen or heard of Luann skipping classes previously. But, students do this on occasion. But, it does not seem something Luann would do. In 2) while she may have possibly been able to add late, the nude modeling type of assignment is not typically a first week of class assignment (at least at the schools I know of), so it seems more likely this is later in the term/semester where it is too late to add a class. In 3) the option of visiting or sitting in on a class (some call it “ghosting”) can happen, but it either happens in a large class (hundreds of students where you would not be noticed) or with permission of the instructor in a small class. I suspect this is a small class, but I do not really get a feeling that Luann has asked permission (although I could be wrong).

It all just seems a bit odd today.

Since there is no prurience involved, I don’t find this inherently annoying or offensive: Luann pondering an artistic challenge. Why not.

Speaking of reaction to nude bodies. A doctor (MD) friend once related to me how long it took him to establish a professional reaction to naked women. He had succeeded finally until, at one clinic, a woman had to disrobe without the privacy of a screen. He related that he realized he had more work to do. True story.

When I was in college and was told that we were going to have a nude model, I made sure I didn’t attend class that day. Did not want to see that.

It is possible that Nil told the instructor of Luann’s talent and possible interest and that she has been invited to join the class. Surely we will find out.

I’m confused. Don’t you have to REGISTER for a class to be able to attend? And isn’t the semester more than halfway finished?

Some art schools offer an opt-out of figure drawing for those (few) students who have some objection to nude models. Maybe that is what Luann wants. But what she needs is to get over her unreasonable fear….

Very sad news about Harry Anderson. He was always great to watch, and seemed like one of the good guys, not overly impressed with his fame.
