Shannon is sharing the bed with Toni because if Shannon sleeps in a room by herself:1. She’ll get into stuff2. Brad and toni won’t be able to resist the urge to have fun and they don’t want shannon walking in on them.
A wonderful way Toni has, in talking their kid guest Shannon out of wanting the “lumpy” old couch, and also keeping her ‘directly’ under Toni’s watchful care! Telling Shannon what she needs to know (in the immediate sense), without telling Shannon what she’ll eventually need to know (especially considering tender-aged Shannon’s imaginative penchant for conflation)!
-
…though I’m sure that, given her facial countenance in the last panel, as she ‘sells’ to Shannon the ‘down side’ of Brad’s sleeping on the bed instead of the couch, Toni really wouldn’t mind the advantages, during those times they happen to be “Shannon-free”….
Toni feels safer having Shannon in the bed with her. She gets into stuff and could very well try to use the stove to make breakfast, put silverware in the microwave, toss a tool in the dryer, go outside to play – without even waking up anyone. She is that kind of child so she needs supervision 24/7. SO, Brad gets relegated to the couch so he can sleep peacefully because for sure Shannon will wake Toni to let her know she gotta go pee and wants a glass of water. Lucky Brad – he gets to sleep undisturbed.
I am sure that Shannon has slept in the same bed with her aunt before, assuming they still used that twin size bed. Wow when I was first married the twin size was great, would not work now, I would fall out. (lol). And it’s good that Brad is not on that couch because he has managed to get into the infamous doghouse that husband’s can be in. Everything is caring and funny,, and Brad and Toni are so accommodating, but I am waiting for the kicker. Something is about to happen that will be a bit more serious. WIth Shannon I always have a chill when the scene is so peaceful with her auntie, and uncle-in-law and is so peaceful and innocent, and dad is gone yet again. Could something go wrong, very wrong? Is the strip ready to go there? I hope not, and it’s just Shannon being Shannon, but the story seems to lend itself to something scary.
Yeah – I guess if Shannon slept on the couch – she might get ideas like trying to make pancakes for Bwad & Toni, etc. Maybe another year before Shannon gets a clue about things she can’t do. She’s 6?
I remember once I was dating a divorcée. Once, late at night, her 3 year old daughter probably had a bad dream and snuck into bed with us. It was a very creepy feeling.
Am wondering how well Brad can do his dangerous job after sleeping on a couch every night….that’s not healthy in the long term. It doesn’t make for a happy marriage, either….with two extra guests within earshot range and not being able to sleep with your wife. They need a counsellor and TJ and Shannon have to live each in their own home.
Toni will let Shannon fall asleep, then sneak out and jump Brad right there on the couch. Of course, either TJ will come wandering home, or Shannon will drift sleepily out wanting a drink.
Shannon is growing up and it is nice to see this. Will Jonas come back the time he said he would? That would be nice. we will wait and see. Luann is one of my favorite comic strips, top “five”.
Several folks are waiting for GnK to drop the other shoe and provide a means for Shannon to take up permanent residence at the DeGroots. As I expressed earlier, I share your concern. But I don’t see where having Shannon as a permanent resident improves the strip. It would disrupt their careers as firefighters that spend several days at a stretch at station. It would change the dynamic between Uncle Brad and Shannon which seems to provide lots of ideas for GnK. It would, in an instant, change Brad and Toni from newlyweds into parental figures; ala Frank and Nancy???
Oh well, that’s my opinion, and I’m stickin’ to it! :o)
Most of the time we are treated to Shannon interacting with Uncle Brad. Less often with Aunt Toni. Witness, yesterday’s toothbrushing gag. One would expect the that Shannon would have expressed a preference for Uncle Brad as a sleep over partner. But I suppose we may assume Uncle Brad and Aunt Toni had dealt with this issue off-strip. :o)
Not from the niece, that’s soon to be a step daughter, after Jonah “buys it” in a tragic auto accident, which prompts a lengthy heart rendering adoption process because Shannon’s mom suddenly shows up to reclaim her daughter, because she’s suddenly feeling repentant and maternal, but is shocked when courts sides with Brad and Toni and awards Shannon to them, where upon Shann’s mom Vows vengeance, and moves nearby to make their lives miserable, and becoming the most hated villain in the Strip since Ann Eiffel, but that’s okay because Shann’s mom is a drop dead gorgeous voluptuous Physics student, who unfortunately ends up falling for Piro. Or WORSE, Les Knox.
Meanwhile across town, Gunther discovers the secret to the “Forever Battery” that NEVER loses its charge, and causes un controlled giddiness when you touch it on the tip of your tongue….,
@PEARLYQIM: Like some of the posters here, Shannon’s behavior is often intended to either annoy or create discomfort. (Of course, the posters have the right to express their opinions. As I do.)
When Shannon wants to show that she is annoyed that her father is not spending time with her, and is instead dumping her off on others, she will sometimes take that displeasure out on those who are trying to be supportive of Jonah. One way she does that is to call Brad ‘Bwad’, because she figures that it annoys him. But more and more, she is coming to both feel more comfortable with Brad, and also to realize that he is not going to respond to her effort to deliberately annoy him. Shannon is perfectly capable of saying ‘Brad’, just as some of the posters here are perfectly capable of not attacking Luann, for example.
Although Shannon is now more comfortable with Brad, that does not mean she sees him as a logical substitute for Jonah, or would go along with the idea of Brad and Toni adopting her. And I sincerely hope that this does not happen.
A somewhat bland effort today. But…. are we waiting for the “other shoe” to drop? Does this relative calm serve as red herring prior to some sort or cataclysmic blowout in the story?!?
1) Lots of folks are predicting the demise of Jonah. But, I tend to think that is unlikely.
2) Dirk returning?!? No, not likely.
3) TJ having a “kablooee-esque” kitchen fire that forces the evacuation of the home? Nah.
4) I guess we will have to settle for the sheer horror (sarcasm) of poor Brad and Toni having to have ONE NIGHT where they do not get to copulate. Oh, my gosh…. the “AGONY” of it.
Okay, I’m just going to say this. Unless Shannon’s dad dies in a car wreck or other tragedy, Brad & Toni are NOT going to adopt Shannon. Toni’s brother may not be Ward Cleaver, but he clearly loves his daughter and she adores him. He is not going to give her up to Toni, and a custody battle would be pointless because there is no cause to remove Shannon from his custody. Shannon is not being neglected or abused, and a single parent relying on family members to assist him is hardly unusual. The only custody issue that could arise is if Shannon’s mother shows up, and I doubt any court would sympathize with a woman who left her child years ago.
I think something will provide a cliffhanger by end of week, like the phone will ring in the middle of the night. I do not want anything to happen to Jonah. The closest we have come to possible tragedy was the forest fire that Toni and Brad and Brad worked on prior to their wedding. No one was harmed.
Here’s the drama (for all the dramaphiles files) around one a.m. Brad and Toni will be called to fight a million alarm fire. Alas and alak, what to do? Let the only major employer in Pittsville burn to the ground? Call Luann. Awaken TJ? Dump Shannon on Frank and Nancy? Wurra, wurra! ;o)
