A provision of the Ontario vehicle code which seems relevant:
“No person shall operate or permit to be operated upon a highway a motor vehicle that carries a load or draws a vehicle that carries a load unless the load is loaded, bound, secured, contained or covered so that no portion of the load may become dislodged or fall, leak, spill or blow from the vehicle. 2002, c. 18, Sched. P, s. 26.”
I don’t think covering the vehicle load with one’s wife counts as securing it.
A former manger told of the time he was helping a college friend move a console piano in a pickup truck. In one turn the truck leaned ominously, then snapped upright, followed immediately by a Crash!! Sproing!!
We hired a piano mover to move our piano, since we wanted it safe and sound in our new place….
Looking at the last panel reminds me of how many time I’ve seen a farmer “collecting” young kids to de-tassel corn, and all of them were bunched together at the back of the truck…. Some boys would try to be “manly” and they kept standing, just barely, as the farmer was driving… I don’t know if they still do that.
It hasn’t been legal to ride in the back of a pick-up in California since I was a teen, unless it has seats and belts back there (like the Subaru Brat). Too many gruesome roll-over and/or thrown-from-vehicle accidents. Some states still allow it though.

That’s how it is in a lot of places. If you point out a problem or a concern then it becomes your responsibility.

I moved a refrigerator once and it received a small crease in the freezer compartment door, I blamed it on my wife’s poor supervision.
