It’s better to wear them tucked in because the leather rubbing against skin can cause abrasions, even open sores. Take it from somebody who wore cowboy boots when he was a kid.
In the early 70’s I worked weekends on a ranch outside Del Rio Texas for $12 a day plus room and board ( Steak, potatoes, onions and campfire tin pot coffee all cooked on a campfire, cast iron frying pan and you settled the coffee grounds by poring cold water on top before drinking. ) We all wore our levi’s tucked into our boots, this kept you and, your britches from being snagged and/or ripped by thorns on shrubs plus barbed wire fences when herding. Our cutting horses would sometimes rub against them and not always by accident. You had to learn how to pull out of the stirrup and lift your leg up and out of the way. I think they did it on purpose. I miss those times.
One of the reasons that “cowboys” tucked their pants inside of their boots was the same reason they wore chaps…. to protect their pants from being torn up on cactus and brush or caked with mud.
High boots were favored over the shorter versions worn by Roy Rodgers and Gene Autry, because they offered more protection and usually were practical rather than fancy tooled.
I’ve worn boots all my life but, even when I owned horses, rarely ever tucked my pants into my boots.
Real men do not wear high heels unless they are on their high horse. My pop grew up when men were men and women knew it. He taught me, "It takes a smart man to know his own father. Sadly, he’s in Arlington and I’m just behind as always.
In brush where livestock and game live so do ticks and chiggers, tucking your pants inside means they climb up the boot, up the pant leg, if you have your shirt tucked in they continue to climb. Spraying the seems with Permethryn ensures that they do not get close to the skin and spraying deet on yourself also is a good idea. If you wear your pants outside your boots you are a fashion statement, if you wear your pants inside your boots you know what you are doing.

I wonder if tucking them in has something to do with riding a horse and not getting your pants cuffs snagged in the stirrups….

My wife has nagged me for years about tucking in my shirt. She hates it. Told her to deal with it. I keep doing it. She gave up.
Keep tucking Earl.

Men working cattle tuck the legs inside the boots, to keep from dragging them through you-know-what.

I wear Boots all the time, and I get no abrasions. I wore them when I was a kid too. No abrasions.

Some pants are made to be tucked into boots. And you don’t have to be a king of anything.
