Hobbes will treasure Calvinâs friendship for about eight more years. But for us C&H fans since the stripâs 1996 discontinuation, it WILL be forever.
My mom was a knitter, she crafted large stockings for all of us with our names and birth year on them. Me, my four bothers, our 28 first cousins, our wives, our cousinâs spouses, grand children, great grand kids, our cousinâs kids. Some were wool, some cotton depending what mom got on sale. Mine is white, red and green with stitched trees, wreaths and more as well as puff balls at the end for hanging. It was a variation on a perfected theme as I am the second youngest of the cousins. When I woke Christmas morning my stocking was stretched taught. As I got wise I remembered to take a flashlight to sleep with so I could explore the wonders of the sock in the wee hours. All the beds were taken with other, more senior family members so I had to keep quiet sleeping fitfully on the floor at least until the sun came up. The excitement of feeling that tube stretched out with magazines, toys, gew gaws, fabulous wondermentâs and always an orange in the toe in the dark is a joy I rarely know 50 plus years later. I held up my sock at my momâs funeral a few years ago and asked âHow many of you have one of these?â Lots of laughs and many, many hands held high. Happy holidays all, tis the season to remember the joys in life!
My favorite C&H strip. Maybe my favorite comic strip of all time. Just perfect. Hobbes messes with Cal, Cal messes with Mom and Dad. Reminds me of me and my brother on Christmas AM. We would sneak down and scope out the âlootâ and fantasize about throwing our sisterâs stuff in the back yard (we never did). And the last panel is pure gold. Thanks Mr Watterson. Thanks a million times over.

One of my absolute favorites from this comic strip. I put the last panel in my liner art for more than one mix tape over the years.
