In this instance, it was a good idea to keep the co-ed in the back of the crowd.

Not that much of a stretch past being subjected to a doctor and a gaggle of students coming into your room in a teaching hospital.

They better hope the IRB has signed off on this, or they may lose their federal grant.

“Oh dear. Neville, we discussed this. They’re supposed to be kept alive as long as possible, not rushed to get through the backlog. The backlog is part of it, like a hospital waiting room. I’m afraid you’re going to have to take his place.”

I hate going to the doctor and a medical student comes in before him and asks me the same questions he will ask. I know they need the training but I only go when I really don’t feel good.

Reminds me of spending time in a bed an a trauma ward. It was a university hospital, so the medical care was top-notch. But the first time the doctor asked me if it was OK to bring students in on his rounds, my first thought was “Sure, no problem. I have nothing but a pillow case covering my nether regions, but by all means, parade a bunch of teenagers through my room.”

Granted, since the vast majority of them were in med school proper (there were a few in pre-med), there weren’t many who were actually teenagers, but still, the first few times, it was a little unnerving to have a bunch of people young enough to be my own kids seeing me very nearly naked. In retrospect, though, it probably would have been even worse if I had been 21 and had the same group of students visiting me in that state.

Reminds me of when I went to see a specialist at a medical college about my inner ear problems. Seems my jaw doesn’t “fit” properly and occasionally pinches off my Eustachian tubes making it difficult for me to hear at times. After he asked my permission, he had his students stick their fingers in my ears while I opened and closed my mouth so they could feel the difference after doing the same to a fellow student. (FYI: He told me putting in tubes in my ears wouldn’t help due to the way my jaw was hinged. The only solution was surgery which would require my jaws be wired shut for a while. I passed.)
