A few years ago a friend of mine was with the army in Iraq. they had a group of Japanese soldiers near them who’d patrol past their station. One day a group of Iraqi children ran up to the Japanese patrol, pointed behind them and screamed “Godzilla!”
weirdly the next day the Japanese captain showed up at my friend’s unit asking who was responsible. strangely both sides were happy to bribe the iraqi kids with candy.
I’m thinking of three possible ways to finish it off (and really, it’s masterful left like this – any revelation will diminish)1. All of this is one of Garfield’s diet hallucinations, and the off-panel menace is a giant lasagna – come to take revenge for all those of its kind devoured by Garfield.2. That Tom & Jerry cartoon where Jerry gets a helping hand from a baby circus elephant and momma circus elephant who pose as giant mice.3. Reaction to off-panel menace that must be four times Garfield’s size (in best available Don Adams – Maxwell Smart voice): "That’s the third-biggest Corgi I’ve ever seen!
Perhaps it’s better if we don’t know exactly who’s next in the chain. eventually it’ll end up with something that can hunt the most dangerous game…man…and nobody really wants that.
