“Just get up and run!” At first it might seem that Thick is giving the worst possible advice to a deranged serial killer. In reality he wants the rats to save themselves from the collapsing granary.
Or, maybe, now that he has Morbid on his back and with his legs open, Thick is trying to coax some privacy from the rats.
“I’m not going to do anything to help you if it might endanger me in some way. However, I am going to give you a piece of advice which has always worked wonderfully for me: Run away in terror! If you’ll just run away in terror, things will always have this way of working themselves out.”
“Just get up and run”. So why didn’t Spacy think of that before he wasted all his ammo, jumped out the window, and then apparently went back into the granary which is only partly demolished?
In yesterday’s strip Mordred was standing at the window or door with Thick. Now he’s lying on the floor. These rats look like the migration of the lemmings.
Been thinking about Tracy’s earlier reaction of horror when Morbid unzipped his mask for him (and not us)….and I’ve concluded Morbid is the bitter victim of a botched vasectomy and that zipper is actually his fly.
Ludwig, this is a flashback that the Dickster is having as he flails about in the cold water. Tomorrow maybe we’ll have one of Mordreck’s flashbacks, and after that one of the rats’.
The next day, Sam will pull the Dickster out of the water.
Then, the kiss of life.
Then, the two of them walk off, hand in hand, into the sunset which has suddenly appeared in the middle of the night, and we have reached THE END. (OF LOCHER).
If this excercise in stupidity doesn’t get them ALL, from Horn Hair down to Thick, up in front of the Police Review Board, nothing will! And if Mordred dies, look out for his lawyer. For he’s a-comin’! Both Mordred’s next of kin and their lawyer will be very wealthy, indeed!
The Prosecution will open up with the insane assignment, the Power Approach, and the complete disregard for a prisoner’s safety. Algonquin J. Calhoun could win this one!
In panel #3, is that rat standing on a barrel or a snare drum? I didn’t know that granaries kept barrels on the upper floors? But what do I know. About the same as Locher.
Brine: It happens all the time. There was the decoy cars that were never mentioned again. Then the route that was aborted because of flat tires, so the exchange started again as if nothing had happened. There was the “all-weather” gear that Sam talked about putting on that never took place. In fact, it was “hours” (comic strip time) before before Sam finally got in a Pacer to go looking for his friend. And there was the plane that was in the area that was searching for Tracy. All of this we have to believe never happened.
They say it’s a sound that is a treat
The pitter-patter of little feet
But in this case I’m not so sure
For the plague of rats they must endure
With chisel teeth and tiny claws
They will give you reason for a pause
The rats, they chew and they bite
They’ll give you a nasty fright
Why does Mordred draw their ire
What about him do they desire?
Tracy holds the rats at bay
His Kung Fu moves save the day
Though Tracy might become dejected
If he gets “not quite the solution he expected”
Mordred we have come to despise
For wearing “an outrageously disgusting disguise”
And here is something you cannot shirk
“Where there’s smoke, there is work”
Ask yourself this if you may be in doubt
“Where did Jonas go when the lights went out”?
I think you may find it rather droll
To hear of “Pickles down the rat hole”
Will you “run across the pages like some tiny elf”
When you see that “ the electrician exposes himself”
I really fell it deep within my bones
This is a case for Flotsam and Hemlock Stones
Why do we read this when we really oughta
Be listening to “The Tale of the Giant Rats of Sumatra”.
Dick Tracy, the “unswervingly honest man”, makes believe he wants to save Mordred, but in the end jumps to save his own butt and leaves Mordred behind.
Hey Sardonis, it’s okay. When I first started wearing an eyepatch, friends asked me what had ahppened and I replied “For Christmas I wanted a Red Ryder BB Gun with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time.”
So I assume its going to take these rats another two or three days to eat Mordred alive? Ill give Locher credit, I never saw this horrible ending coming.
Was by any chance todays strip supposed to be Sunday’s and Sunday’s today? Maybe it’s just a foolish thought. Another good one WW. Glad we have something to look forward to. It certainly isn’t the plot..
You know, I actually finished reading “Battlefield Earth”. God’s Mercy, it was awful, it was stupid, it made no sense whatsoever. But once I start a book, I finish it.
I’m going to stick with these final few days. But I tell you all.
This has been harder for me than finishing “Battlefield Earth.”
Is this what happened? Tracy jumped into the water, only to return to the collapsing granary to make another effort to convince Mordred to jump. Meanwhile, the rats have landed on a drum left at the granary by a rock group years ago. The rats are playing the drum and, it appears, singing. Tracy is conducting the rats in their symphony. That’s believable but how in the world did Tracy manage to dry his clothes after the plunge?

The rats finally have Locher where they’ve wanted him all along–cornered, humiliated, and considering a plunge into the abyss.

Panel 1 is an analogy: To Locher, he is Mordred and we are the rats, attacking him!

Now we will continue going back and back until we get to the four flat tires which caused the tear in the space-time continuum in the first place.

So first Tracy is rescued by the rats, and now he needs to be rescued FROM the rats.
