Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for February 21, 2011
Transcript:
Jeff: Should I answer a call from a blocked number? I always regret it. Oh, what the heck... this is Jeff. Overkill: Jeff, this is Overkill! Jeff: Oh... sorry. I meant this is Jeff's phone! Jeff died. Overkill: Kid, how would you like to NOT die? Jeff: Would I? Count me in, sir! Zipper: Good news?

And the week starts with a high level of intrigue.
BE THIS GUY almost 14 years ago
What Overkill should say is: How would you like to die again?
Of course we know the Red Rascal will survive this adventure.

Berzerkistan won’t know what hit it!

This could turn out to be worse than the Ransom of Red Chief.

I’d like to see him pull it off. Sometimes real success is all it takes to change a total screw-up into a squared away individual. I’ve seen it happen.

There’s a good chance Jeff will recognize Duke. I don’t know if they’d met personally, but Rick may have mentioned Duke to him.
“Something the matter, kid?” “Just remembering my father telling me about how he rescued you from being a zombie. And I thought I made up incredible stories.” “…Yeah, right, kid. Just a story.”

Red Rascal to the Rescue.

I think the Red Rascal must take on this mission. And he will come out alive, making profit for Overkill and Duke. Will he see any money? Don’t know. Will the president whose name’s spelling eludes me survive? Don’t care.

Could have been worse…could have been a telemarketer.

Oh boy, this is gonna be great!

but for Jeff, real death would be so…….real.

Actually, Mr. Trudeau, this might not be a good time. ;-7

You know, CDEdward, at this point I don’t think Jeff is worrying too much about getting paid. He is more worried about not being killed for dropping Overkill’s $50 milliion. These mercs tend to be a bit testing about things like that. Making examples of people and stuff like that.

If the Red Rascal can manage to get Bmzklfrpz out of Berzerkistan, in about two more weeks he might get an even more difficult assignment:
Extract Scott Walker from Wisconsin!

This story arc has become really tedious.

If Duke and Jeff did meet, their “Two Degrees of Separation” would probably never be mentioned. If Trudeau were to open the gates of interconnectedness of his cast, it could lead to a flood.
Besides Jeff’s dad (Rick) rescuing Duke from zombiehood, Jeff’s best friend (Zipper) is the nephew of Duke’s nephew (Zonker), Duke’s ex-caretaker (whatsisname/Chucklebutt) is shacking up with Jeff’s half-sister (J.J.), Zipper’s in love with Jeff’s niece (Alex), Jeff’s mom (Joanie) lived on a commune with Duke’s nephew/Zipper’s uncle (Zonker) and Zipper’s dreamgirl’s dad (Mike)…
(I wonder if Boopsie ever made a movie with Kevin Bacon.)

Is redemption at hand for Red Rascal? Stay tuned…

What surprises me is that all this time Jeff has still been on the payroll…still getting paid…and Jeff hasn’t noticed.
But then again, how else was he going to pay back the $50 million, right?

How do you answer a call from a blocked number??? When I block a call, not only does it not ring, I don’t even know I’m getting a call from it! It’s blocked! Hence the named blocked! That sounds more like filtered.

As randgrithr’s link demonstrates, G.T.’s timing is terrible. Jeff and Overkill are a distraction from the Raymond Davis incident, not an editorial comment on it. Doonesbury is still on vacation from reality—just another, boringly drawn cartoon.
Nemesys almost 14 years ago
DirtyDragon, that won’t be necessary. Walker’s political enemies are not much of a threat as long as they’re hiding in an out-of-state tanning spa. However, the Rascal may be called in one day to bring the fugitives back to work.
Let’s not underestimate Jeff. After all, he has international fame, experience transporting large sums of money, and a confirmed chopper kill. Boo-yah!

It is just patently unfair to other comic strip artists that current world events have played right into Gary Trudeau’s hands. He really couldn’t have orchestrated things any better….hey….wait a minute…I smell a conspiracy here!

All I can say is Trudeau has brought it all together nicely. We wouldn’t be so glued to our computer seats if Jeff had not messed up so much and so wonderfully in all the previous and he hadn’t made himself this intelligent and lovable fictional character. So now the stage is set. yes we know he’s gonna get out alive but how is GB going to do it. Stay tuned

Trudeau does have a genius but he’s also managed to painstakingly develop a cast of characters that can be placed into just about every storyline situation. And each storyline can also be viewed from the perspective of multiple characters. My hat off to you sir!
