It is perfectly acceptable, in fact traditional, to east sushi with your fingers. It is completely unacceptable to eat sashimi (raw fish with no attached rice) with anything other than chopsticks.
I was at a church social when the pin on some tongs broke. I took the separate pieces like big chop sticks and began serving salad. The folks were pleased and amazed.
My hands shake to much to hold chopsticks the “proper” way, but I can still feed myself by holding them differently, though a fork or spoon is much easier for me to use.
The Japanese word for chopsticks is hashi. The way to say it phonetically, is “hah-she”.
There are several important manners for using hashi, or Japanese chopsticks. One of the most important is, when you aren’t using your chopsticks, to put them on top of the bowl, rather than just hanging in the food.

“Because sushi doesn’t taste right if you eat it with a fork……
Too much food makes it into your mouth instead of falling on the table or floor."

This is why I use my fingers. I am not adept at using chopsticks.

Sushi doesn’t taste right, regardless of what you eat it with. It is disgusting.

At my favorite sushi bar I always request a fork (and spoon) because; to quote Jim Gaffigan, “I’m too white for chopsticks!”

There’s a great little sushi shop in Nanaimo, BC. Might be worth a drive down tomorrow.
