I have pleasant memories of fantasizing about stuff I learned from books in the 5th or 6th grade that I never actually experienced – like living in a castle or riding on a stage coach or visiting a blacksmith shop.
AHD: “nos·tal·gi·a (nŏ-stăl’-jə, nə-) n. 1. A bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past.” So, yes, Miss Plainwell. It is one of the most common uses.
So, what, jef doesn’t like/have dogs? “Wet dog smell” must come from dirty dogs. My three and my daughter’s five have been soaked but don’t get like that.
Regarding the pain of thawing digits, that’s what ice climbers (who would certainly be in a position to know) call the “screaming barfies.” If that sounds a little crude to you under normal circumstances, so be it. To come up with anything approaching language at all when your frozen fingers are thawing is to commit pure poetry.
Regarding the smelly wet dog, that’s what dog owners (who would certainly be in a position to know) call “love.” Eventually, if not at the time.

One of life’s mysteries, why wet puppies smell bad and 17 year old toms that have never been bathed don’t.

I’d rather smell wet dog than not have a dog for a companion. Especially if she was recently given a bath. :-)

You wonder why they aren’t wearing better gloves so they won’t freeze and maybe turn a lovely shade of black then fall off…
