Reminded me of the all night Marx Brothers Channel 9 used to carry, but that was on New Years Eve ….Mansplaining Warning: This is our longest night, but not our earliest sunset, or even latest sunrise. Because of our elliptical orbit, and middle latitudes, our sunsets started getting later about a week ago. To further confuse things, our sunrises will keep getting later for about 10 more days.
My parents settled down to watch TV the first night they owned one. Suddenly, Mum sat up and exclaimed, “Russell, look! It’s broken already!” All that was on the screen was static and snow. They had both fallen asleep and missed the sign-off.
I miss the delicious decadence of repeatedly falling asleep and waking up late at night in a comfy chair in front of a TV set with a movie I’m half interested in.
We go to three of Ikea’s smorgesbords at our local Ikea. At the Christmas one as part of the entertainment they have a group that comes in and talks about St. Lucia and sings related songs (dressed in related costume). They say that in Sweden Dec 13, St. Lucia Day, is the longest night of the year – every year – in Sweden. Never understand how that can be that true there, and yet, our shortest day here is Dec 21.

Yeah, anything that leads to contented snuggling on the couch is clearly a bad thing, Janis.

Got a very good night’s sleep, which is rare. Harvey (our newest mutt) let me sleep in until 4:39 am.

More like a couple of minutes here in the flatlands, but 9:13 sunrise just makes cabin fever worse.

In a child’s world, Christmas Eve is the longest night of the year.

I spent a month this year, as an amateur astronomer, toting around an inflatable planetarium, explaining the analemma to 4th graders.
