It’s generally agreed by people who’re happy that letting other people be in charge of how you feel won’t work to make you happy. Wanting to be “known” is letting other people be in charge of how you feel. On the other hand if you’re a “maker” I can guarantee that happiness is pretty much just building stuff. Excellent stuff (by your own measure of excellent) is better, but just making it feels plenty good.
Though watching people turn green and run for the exits when you make a pun is pretty good too.
Events we spent all night watching 50 years ago by a trio of pioneers just doesn’t cut it today with hundreds involved in ongoing work. Let something go wrong tho, and it will be back on the 24/7 docket.
Italian Luca Parmitano (leader) , Russian Aleksandr Skvortsov, Oleg Skripochka, American Christina Koch, Andrew Morgan, Jessica Meir (ISS crew that just came back). French Léopold Eyharts (Did a mission on Mir and one on ISS). Japanese Akihiko Hoshide, twice to ISS and one space walk. Parminato nearly drowned on his second spacewalk in 2013 when his system filled his helmet with water…So many of them, ignored by all.
“Happy are those who dream dreams and are willing to pay the price to make them come true.” —-Quotation from a cheezy poster in somebody’s dorm room in the early 70’s. I can’t remember who painted it…

Under the Deming Way, you should shoot for continuous quality improvement (CQI), which teaches that it’s possible to double your quality (productivity, profits, etc.) but almost never by one giant leap of 100% over the status quo, almost always by 100 tiny 1% increments. And the people most likely to supply you with those tiny 1% increments are the ones closest to your end product or service: your workers and your customers. A good manager listens!
“And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.” Matthew 6:5
You know that line about how if you do what you love, you never have to work a day in your life? It’s total horse hooey. Make no mistake, I absolutely love what I do. I’ve never not loved this job. But oh, my God, is it work. And I’m fine with that.
And I still recommend that you do what you love if you want to get any good at what you do, because otherwise you’ll go buggy doing all the repetitive little incremental gains and setbacks between the rare breakthroughs.

If you want to be noticed, just make a mistake. (corollary to “no good deed goes unpunished”)

Buzz Aldrin is still alive. But we’re meant to pick up every obscure literary reference the lad drops?

Sure I would like to contribute to our species. I think many do. Few may be remembered.
