its a story line. She was being a bit “sensational” when she drew this decades ago. LOL And yes, she has drawn John as a sort of insensitive man at times, they can be. So can WE. I just enjoy the time line’s and reliving stories I missed when I wasn’t getting the paper when it was running current to her drawing it. I cried when she ended the strip. It has amazing stories and broke quite a few walls and ceilings in it’s creation. I wish she’d return.
Hmmm. A liter weighs 2.2 pounds, plus the weight of the glass bottle. Let’s say 3 pounds total. I wonder how many bottles of wine that big suitcase holds? 10? 15? Poor John. Coming up the stairs with that and another suitcase, that is quite a load.
As for the two nosy ladies—don’t they represent people we have all been subjected to? Gossip is cruel. I have never known a gossiper to say something nice about another person. They want to assume the worst. Maybe because their own lives are so shabby?
John is just a victim of the “time frame”. He is a bit selfish in some ways, like sports cars and choo choo trains. He is also supportive if Elly really wants something.
The “babe” part is basically a body-shaming joke. The idea is that if Maeve and Cecily stuck around to see Fiona there, then they would realize that Fiona was not a “babe” and they would assume John would not be having an affair with a woman who looked like Fiona. Essentially they are saying, “John is the type of sleazy guy who would cheat on his wife, but he does have standards. No fat chicks.” It’s not that John wouldn’t have the affair because Fiona is his cousin, it’s because Fiona is not a “babe”.
For some reason, I’m reminded of The Flintstones. Every time Fred did something unusual, Wilma thought he was seeing another woman. Does he look like such a great prize?
The last time I was subjected to gossip, we were at a wedding in a community which did not know me. The ladies of the church were cold towards me and snubbed me—at a wedding! I was hurt and couldn’t understand why. I was the groom’s mother. But those biddies could not be civil to me because, it turned out, they believed I was the “hot babe second wife,” because I am slender and athletic. Such sweet people. I’m glad I’m not part of that community.

Love today’s strip! It serves as a reminder to people to mind their own business!
(Unless someone’s getting hurt or is in danger, of course)
