This reminds me of a STNG episode where the Enterprise visits a planet engaged in terraforming. After a time they find out that the planet, which was supposed to be void of all life, did in fact have life, but of microbe size.
This reminds me of a thoughtful article I read years ago. How would we recognize intelligent life if it was sufficiently different from us? And how would aliens landing on earth recognize we were intelligent? I mean, we build cities. So do ants and termites, etc.
“For thousands more years the mighty starships tore across the empty wastes of space and finally dived screaming on to the planet Earth—where, due to a terrible miscalculation of scale, the entire battle fleet was accidentally swallowed by a small dog.”
My family once visited a swamp that we were told was full of frogs, but we didn’t recognize them right away. I was the first to realize they could be tiny. Sure enough, the bug-sized purple things were leaping around….

I’d be interested in a scientific appraisal of this joke.

Better alien recon could have avoided this type of encounter.
