He needs to know two things to get this right, what Hemisphere he is in and either which direction is true South or true North. To set a Sun Dial, it must point either true South in the Southern hemisphere and in the Northern Hemisphere it has to point to the true North.

You first have to know which time zone you are in. But that doesn’t help if you don’t even know what time it is where you are.

Johnny Hart forgot to draw shadows. That sun dial won’t work without them.
