Brother and I got a good laugh when we saw this one. Made us think of what our dad told us about his learning English. Think words like Door and Poor, Cough and Bough.
English seems to be a language put together by a committee. I once mentioned to my class that I “speak” Cherokee. (Not that any native speaker would ever agree with me.) Once you nail down the 80-odd symbols, it is easy to read. This symbol is always “da” and that symbol is always “ni”. So we tried it with English; they designed a symbol of “ought”, and we tried to see how many ways that could be combined with an English letter to make a word. Thought, brought, caught, allot. We had a grand time. And then we got back to what I was supposed to be doing!

Here’s your blackened ghoti, Mr. Phtholoyrrh. Can I get you anything else right now?
Everyone knows that ghoti is pronounced fish.
But do you know how Phtholoyrrh is pronounced?

English is a mongrel language of dubious parenthood. That’s what makes it such a powerful language.
