Your brain going into gridlock while taking a math test…. If I had a dime for every time this has happened to me when I was in school, I’d have a lot of dimes, put it that way….
Calvin is a typical example of a little boy who is not ready for school yet. It has been proved that boys learn differently to girls. If fact there is a private school in our area that focuses on the ways boy learn and all their teaching methods are based on that.
Someone said recently that this is the Bats Essay story arc again. It’s actually closer to the baseball story arc from earlier this year right down to the Spaceman Spiff distraction subplot. In both story arcs, Calvin doesn’t want to take part in something but then becomes overconfident.
Amazingly the sixth planet of the Mysterio system looks exactly like the fifth planet of the Solar system, but how is that going to help him ace the maths test? Oh I get it, Calvin thinks 6+5 actually reads 6&5.
Well, at least he STARTED with the right attitude. Whenever I’d help my kids with math, I’d tell them that you have to be confident because math problems can smell fear.
…aaaand here we go. I wonder if astronauts actually ever use algebra when they are in space. I mean really, what are they doing up there, balancing their check books?
I had a math student like that, well; she actually mastered all the math, but she was so creative that her mind would wander and she’d do lousy on tests. It was very hard to give her an appropriate grade. (first time I began to think portfolio grades might be worthwhile)
Yep, that’s pretty much what would typically happen when taking a quiz/test in school. Even if I studied, my mind would go blank just as I’m starting it…
From things he says and references, Calvin’s knowledge of science, history, literature, politics, and archeology (dinosaurs), combined with his vocabulary are frequently at a college level. Is math the only thing he is bad at?

So they didn’t double the bet (according to Calvin) from 25 to 35 cents? Suzie missed a chance. Or she took pity on him.
