For whatever reason, a fair number of people find “perkiness” to be annoying. They even dislike the sound of the word “perky.”
I think the incarnation of “perky” in our era was Mary Tyler Moore.
My mother, pretty much the kindest, most generous, most welcoming person I’ve ever known hated Mary Tyler Moore. What? Who hates Mary?
When I asked why, she was never able to articulate an answer. Her jaw would set in a grimace, her voice dripping disgust, she’d say, I just can’t stand that woman!
[As an aside… I hear that phrase a great lot in reference to female politicians, from both men and women. Somehow they think that explains it all. Men will often add that the woman in question is “ugly”.]
I think perkiness may have been the root cause.
But I also think of the classic exchange between Mary and Lou Grant :
Hey Corina one last thing ,Don’t run in the hallway the floors are very slippery because Mopman makes them too shinny . In all reality , I don’t care but remember snitches get stitches.
Oh that belligerent, incorrigible Corina! She doesn’t play team sports because she HATES AUTHORITY and being told what to do. And then she joins the volleyball team for the sole reason of being able to quickly leave a conversation with two girls she just met.
Guess ’Pheebs forgot to mention to Heckl and Jeckyl how Corina would be such a great fit for volleyball because not only is she a dam good rag-tag softball catcher, but she hates teammates and coaches. ’Pheebs is the problem here…not CK
Well I guess we’ll have some volleyball action this year. At least that’s different. I don’t remember the last time we saw volleyball. (Did we have that at least once in the past? Not sure.) But we can probably look forward to CK getting a few technical fouls this season.
And speaking of looking forward, you can look forward to reading two new Mopped Up Thorp entries today!

You know, Mary, you’ve got spunk.
Mary Richards:
Why, thank you, Mr. Grant!
Lou Grant:
I hate spunk.
CK has spunk but hates perky.

CK certainly could have played for Coach Jake Gaither (204-36, 25 yrs) at Florida A&M . He wanted players who were “ag-ile, mo-bile, and hos-tile.”
