The Pipes, The Pipes are calling me Home ! I go to a couple of Highland festivals ever summer unfortunately all were canceled this year , DAMN COVID 19 !!!!!!
“Torture” isn’t a sound. Torture is the infliction of emotional and/or physical pain to punish, coerce, extort, and/or give the torturer sadistic pleasure. Brookins & MacNelly could just as easily have had him say “I need a seven-letter word for the effect a bagpipe brings about.”
From the movie Braveheart I learned that Edward I (played by Patrick McGoohan) banned the playing of bagpipes as being subversive. Or maybe he was just musical.
Brookins and MacNelly missed this one. The reply in the first panel should have been, “Hmmmmmm”; then the second panel could feature the questioner’s reply: “Thanks.”
Or, taking the Brookins / MacNelly approach, the answer should have been, “Bagpipe.” Of course, that was probably what the author of the crossword puzzle had in mind.
“These are bagpipes. I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man-made sound never equaled the purity of the sound achieved by the pig.” — Alfred Hitchcock

Why do you often see bagpipe players walking while playing? To get away from the noise.
