I used to tell my nephews they were obstreperous and impertinent. They were eight and seven, respectively. They still remember, deep in their thirties.
My mother used to call me that. It never occurred to me that I didnāt know EXACTLY what it meant. (Noisy, unruly, boisterous and defiant.) She was right.
Caleb was a very eager 1st grader. One day, he got home all excited because he had a āspecial assignment.ā He handed me a paper that said, āask your Dad to tell you what obstreperous means.ā
So I took out the dictionary and read to him. He was looking very guilty. āCaleb, have you been being obstreperous?ā
I mentioned the special assignment to the teacher. She laughed. āI get to use that assignment every couple years!ā
Before Bill Cosby became a pariah, one of my favorite lines of his was on the subject of arguing with his wife: āIāve called her some names that I was proud I even thought of! And sheās run some off on me that Iāve written down!ā

I never pictured Earl as obstreperous. Obfuscatory, perhaps, but not obstreperous.

I disagree. Earl is willful, but not rambunctious or boisterous. I donāt think the word applies.
