Surprised I‘m first on this one.

This was central to the Trump years, that Trump was the state.

Need a historian out there. If I recall, “Under God” was not in the original Pledge. Original Pledge was from around World War I, and “Under God” was added well after World War II.

Not that either version of the Pledge was ever sanctioned by the law or the Constitution.

Yet somehow, became a daily requirement and recitation in public schools.

And today, a “litmus test” of sorts for “proving” one’s patriotism – and religiosity.

    For what it’s worth.

Trump cultists are demanding neither a republic nor a democracy, but a monarchy. With Trump’s lawsuits steadily being thrown out of court, they’re pinning their hopes on state legislatures ignoring the vote to appoint Trump-friendly electors, or the Supreme Court finding an excuse to throw out millions of votes. They don’t care that 81,000,000 American citizens chose Joe Biden to lead us. (Remember: if you live in a blue state, or a blue city in a red state, you are not a real American to the Trump cultists, and your vote should not count.)

I never say the “one nation under god” line. It would make more sense if it said “one nation under the sky”. When I told my children there is no god, they said, does this mean we aren’t going to burn in hell. They looked so relieved. When I told them there is no santa, they cried. So I told them, stop crying, or you’ll burn in hell. The power of guilt.

“I fear that in every elected office, members will obtain an influence by noise not sense. By meanness, not greatness. By ignorance, not learning. By contracted hearts, not large souls . . . There must be decency and respect.”

We should never have put “under God” in there. Billy Graham should never have convinced Eisenhower to put it in to combat the stupid “Communist threat”.

I’ll be a little picky here: this reading contains a common error: The comma after the word “Nation” doesn’t exist in the official version.

So, who else in the comments got detention for refusing to perform the idolatrous ritual of pledging to the flag?

Tanks for the pledge, but there is an error. There is no comma after one nation. It is One Nation Under God.

He’s OK with it because she included the reference to god, and who else COULD she be talking about?

Interesting…allegiance to the flag, not the Constitution.

This is why our US military does not recite the Pledge of Allegiance. It sounds nice, but means nothing. Klansmen recite the Pledge, with emotion filled tears in their eyes. School kids chant it, and it means nothing to them.

I swore an Oath to Protect and Defend the Constitution. It means something. A pledge? To a flag that is nothing but a symbol which means something different to everyone? No. The Pledge fills me with fellowship with other Americans. But it does not have the Power of my Oath.
