I loved seeing these characters from my childhood but I can’t figure this one out. I see the comments about mouths but that’s not it right? Your comics always make me think.
Funny that they are ignorant about the cartoon physics of the world they inhabit, though it never seems to prevent them from getting drunk. Mmmmmmmm, egg-nog…
Likely there are other guests at this gathering, so maybe the mistletoe (or holly? as someone above pointed out) is there for a reason.
It also struck me that, while I’m sure Dilbert is a human male (even if usually drawn without a mouth), I’m not at all sure of the gender identity of the other three, despite the Martian being named Marvin and the other two having what many would consider a female aspect. So the cause of their bewilderment might not be what we think it is, and this cartoon might have a deeper meaning than we suspect. Or, I’m just reading a lot into it.

And wait! How are they supposed to drink from the glasses they are holding?

Is that Alice the Goon from Popeye? Quite the motley crew there.

We need some Robert Crumb characters to show what’s what.

Why is there Holly hanging instead of mistletoe? Is that why they are bewildered?

Dilbert starts boring everybody when he begins lecturing on how Mistletoe is an example of Master Persuasion.

No Peanuts characters? They sometimes don’t show their mouths when their face is on their side!

They never get any dates anyhow.

Pretty sure Magneto and most Marvel characters would have an issue with that…

A scene from the classic science fiction short story, I Have No Mouth and I Must Kiss?
