My brother made his own bread for years, until a great bakery opened in his neighborhood. I’ve tried, but apparently like Arlo, have never been quite happy with the outcome. Unlike Arlo, I no longer try. There’s a decent bakery nearby here also.
Janis, the idea is to get a rise out of the dough, not Arlo. But if you really want to get a rise out of Arlo tell him it’s time for the bathroom sommelier.
From my first loafs, following the recipe on the flour package, every one has turned out just like they were supposed to. It’s not that hard! The crusty warm first bites are still worth the effort.
I’m a pretty good cook, but a lousy baker. The problem with baking for me is that you have to follow the recipe, when cooking I use the recipe as a starting point and then riff off from there. Bad things happen when you try that baking. On the bright side, I now know have to make hockey pucks!
I have a break machine and it gets used extensively fall – spring when we are having soup or stew for dinner or if we were having friends over. It’s nice to throw everything in before I go to work and set the delay start so I come home to warm, freshly made bread for dinner.
The real problem with homemade bread, machine or hands, is it never cools down! It just doesn’t last that long. Grandkids come over to make bread in the bread machine and are salivating before it’s finished. When it comes out, the knives are already cutting slices.

Which came first, beer or bread? They both start with the exact same ingredients. But as a third generation German home brewer, I vote for beer.

My wife makes homemade bread. When people ask her what kind of bread machine she has, she smiles, holds up her hands and flexes her fingers…

Why should it bother her if Arlo does become frustrated and upset? All she has to do is walk away.

Janis is well aware of his lack of baking bread prowess!

And Janis is there to sour the dough.

Bread is difficult.

Not unlike sex, applaud but don’t critique. Lowered expectations are fine.

Why would things go wrong? He’s made bread before and it isn’t that hard.
