She is assuming (inferring) that his noise is whistling – The frequency produces a pitch only the dogs can hear – she can’t hear it herself.

If this has happened before, there must be a touch, a nudge, a push,

… or a pillow over his head that she could use.

And he wonders, why he always wakes up with fleas…
