The folks commenting yesterday about the start of reruns from Watterson’s sabbatical period must have been right. Today’s installment is from Dec. 9, 1985, the beginning of the fourth week of the strip.
This is just your typical soap opera that was all over daytime television in the 80s. No special channels were needed, and no special wires. Just an antenna on your tv.
Before I was old enough to go to school, I would watch the soaps with my mother. All I remember is one whole week of 2 characters stringing beans from a basket into a bowl. Not very exciting.
Guys, if you see someone spamming, DON’T reply to them. It will just encourage them more. Just flag their comment, message a GoComics Mod, get a snack, and watch them get banned.
In the 60’s, if I was off sick from school, I’d usually cuddle up in Granny’s bed to watch her stories with her. She had a gorgeous double sleigh bed. I miss that thing… miss her more though
In the 80’s I would come home from work and my wife would say “You’ll never guess what Luke did to Laura!” I would say “Are they neighbors I haven’t met or don’t remember?” She would say “No they’re on Days of Our Lives!” ;o}
I sometimes saw daytime soaps when I was a kid, like a lot of people my age. They’re not as common as they were, but I don’t really miss them. ‘Luann’ is bad enough for random, ridiculous storylines.
In 1941 it was Arthur Godfrey drinking Lipton Tea, Stella Dallas, etc. on the radio. But being in NJ close to NY I enjoyed big band music, or classical music when being sick with something.
Day time soaps had everything but live sex. It seemed every mother watched them. Mom planned her house chores around them, and game shows. Yet mom was surprised when a I asked “Have you or Dad have ever have affair?”
Unlike these days, in 1991, he had a rich selection of salacious scenes to watch..Days of our lives, Another World, Santa Barbara, The Young and the Restless(I still watch..), The Bold and the Beautiful, As the World, Guiding Light, Loving, All My Children, One Life to Live, & General Hospital..!

Sure, why teach sex ed in the school from a careful curriculum when they can just get it at random from steamy soap operas? Sheesh!

You do learn a lot from TV. It’s mostly just B.S. but it is informational. Even “Roseanne” had some lessons in it.

I much prefer the way C&H were drawn in later years.

It seems someone different was drawing this strip the last few days or so. Anyone know why?

Seeing the glass thermometer, it’s hard for me to believe these are over 30 years old. Soon C&H will be in the vintage comic section.
