As I say in an earlier reply, Mom’s suspicions about Calvin and the umbrella come a little too late. She sees the umbrella as uncharacteristic foresight and congratulates him before becoming suspicious. Calvin does show some planning as this strip – and many others – show. It’s just that other characters don’t share Calvin’s thrill-seeking and experimental mind.

I wonder if Calvin can swim? Both of my kids were good swimmers by that age.

I suspect this is the precursor of “Falling with style.”, though what Calvin lacks in style he makes up in enthusiasm.
