As I say in an earlier reply, Mom’s suspicions about Calvin and the umbrella come a little too late. She sees the umbrella as uncharacteristic foresight and congratulates him before becoming suspicious. Calvin does show some planning as this strip – and many others – show. It’s just that other characters don’t share Calvin’s thrill-seeking and experimental mind.
This reminds me of some of the things my older brother used to do. He injured his 4 younger sisters several times, until we got old enough to wise up and stop playing with him.

An umbrella would still be helpful for keeping the sun off you.

I wonder if Calvin can swim? Both of my kids were good swimmers by that age.

I suspect this is the precursor of “Falling with style.”, though what Calvin lacks in style he makes up in enthusiasm.

Excellent plan, Calvin! And as they hurtle down in the wagon, you can hit them with water balloons.
